Darby Allin Added To The Great Muta’s Retirement Match

It appears that Sting has gotten his wish granted as Darby Allin will be competing in Japan with him.

“The Icon” recently reunited with The Great Muta at AEW Rampage: Grand Slam, where the two fended off The House of Black. Shortly after, Sting revealed to be a part of his former ally’s upcoming retirement match at The Great Muta’s Final “Bye-Bye” event in Japan. The AEW star expressed his hope for his tag team partner Darby Allin to be involved as well. Now, that hope has become a reality.

As announced by Pro Wrestling NOAH, Muta will now team with Sting and Darby Allin in a six-man tag team match. Their three opponents have not been announced. However, they will compete on January 23, 2023  at the Yokohama Arena as planned.

The Great Muta’s retirement match will mark the first time he shares a ring with Darby Allin. In teaming with Sting, the two reunite after more than 18 years since they last competed in the same ring. In July 2004, the duo tag teamed to take on WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page and Satoshi Kojima at HCW’s Battle Hawaii event — where Muta and Sting emerged victorious.

“The Icon” Sting previously spoke with Sports Illustrated about his career winding down as well. He “know[s] my days are numbered,” but he is “trying to make the most out of the time left.” In anticipation of his match with Muta, he shared that he was “looking forward to having one last grand hoorah with The Great Muta, especially in Japan.”

The Great Muta character will soon begin the last leg of his retirement tour. This includes the aforementioned “Bye-Bye” event, and another dream matchup. Muta will wrestle against WWE’s  Shinsuke Nakamura on January 1st at “NOAH: The New Year 2023.”
