IYO SKY Considered Returning To Japan Prior To Return At WWE SummerSlam

IYO SKY recently considered returning her home in Japan.

Prior to her return at SummerSlam on July 30th, SKY (formerly Io Shirai) was absent from WWE television following NXT Stand & Deliver in April. Subsequently, she sustained an ankle injury and her contract with the company was reportedly set to expire during that time. There was plenty of uncertainty as to if she would re-sign with WWE, and a recent appearance on WWE After The Bell revealed that SKY even considered returning to Japan during this time away.

“Yeah, it might have happened [returning to Japan],” SKY admitted. “I’ve been here four years. I came here to the United States 2018, and now we’re in 2022. I spent time the whole pandemic here, I came here by myself. Honestly, I don’t have family here and that time is so tough. I tried to think, ‘should I stay here more or not?’ I got injured and I took [time off after] surgery, and that time was thinking about my life again. Sometimes I think ‘if I have family here, it makes my stay stable.'”

SKY returned to WWE at SummerSlam alongside Bayley and Dakota Kai. In addition, the three had a confrontation with RAW Women’s Champion Bianca Belair and “Big Time Bex” Becky Lynch. Bayley continued on the podcast to joke that they had to “reel her [SKY] back in” ahead of their SummerSlam appearance.

IYO SKY and Dakota Kai currently find themselves in the finals of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship tournament. On Monday Night RAW, they defeated Alexa Bliss and Asuka to advance. Their tournament finals’ opponents will be determined tonight on Smackdown.
