If you have noticed that the language on AEW Dynamite and Rampage has been toned down a bit as of late, there’s a reason for that.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has noted that Warner Bros. Discovery has asked All Elite Wrestling to tone down on their language as of late.
“Word has gotten to the promotion from WBD that they’d like the language toned down,” Meltzer wrote. “As best we can tell, they have said nothing about the blood.”
Even with a TV-14 rating, some of the language we’ve heard on AEW Dynamite and Rampage has been arguably excessive in recent months. In the age of advertising and ad sales, it’s not surprising that Warner Bros. Discovery has asked Tony Khan to tone down the language a bit on his weekly television products.
Following this report, you can bet fans are going to be paying more attention to the promos on AEW Dynamite and Rampage going forward.
Update: Will Washington of Fightful/Grapsody reports that AEW stated that the quote about the language was taken out of context from the talent meeting on August 24, specifically from the portion about promos and talent going into business for themselves. Per Washington, the point of the message was that “they could get network heat if they fly too close to the sun”, but this was not an edict from the network.
