Baron Corbin has been given a new role on Monday Night Raw: the official Constable. He will serve as Stephanie McMahon’s eyes and ears, and will see to it that the rules are enforced.
Some see it as another bad Corbin role, I see it as an opportunity in many ways. For starters, it gives off the impression that Stephanie McMahon won’t be on TV as much which is always a positive notion. It also gives Corbin an opportunity to thrive in a non-wrestling role. Let’s be honest, he’s not exactly the most thrilling in-ring. He isn’t bad, but Raw has no shortage of exceptional ring generals at this time. The Miz almost had it right when he called Corbin, “a generic big man who’s going to be gone in two years.” He’s not generic, he’s a bit above that. As far as being gone in two years, I don’t think that’ll be the case.
Corbin is the perfect fit for the role if you think it over. He’s a big guy, so an enforcer role of sorts should come naturally. His character gives off the vibe that he wishes the worst for everyone but himself. When he told Kurt Angle to reverse the decision of the six woman tag team match on the June 4th edition or Raw, and Kurt followed suit, it ascertained that he indeed has as much power as he wants on the show. This can be good or bad, depending on how his power is used.
A small glimmer of brilliance was Corbin’s delighted look when he told Kurt of his new assignment. By and large, Corbin is more of a silent killer type who holds a straight face and occasionally snarls. This new position of power realistically brings joy to anyone in the world who obtains it. His cocky smile and laugh should be more emphasized as the weeks roll through.
If I’m WWE, I keep Corbin out of the ring for longer periods at a time. Nothing against his in-ring work ethic, but as an authority figure, Corbin would stand out from the rest of the roster if he spends the majority of his time “enforcing” rather than getting involved in the ring. I slightly alter his look to wear similar attire to the Big Boss Man, and the recruit The Authors of Pain as his cohorts. Let them dish out the punishment to anyone who disagrees with his views, Kurt Angle included. It’ll give them meaning on Raw and an easy pathway to the Raw Tag Team Championship. Letting Corbin stay out of harm’s way for longer builds heat, and builds the need to see him finally get his ass handed to him when the time is right.
