Jon Jones is back! One of the greatest fighters in all of MMA history returned to the octagon Saturday night, defeating future Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier to win his second UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
Cormier came into the bout at 19-1 as the reigning champion for the past two years, looking to avenge his sole loss at the hands of Jones back in 2015. It was a bout between the two greatest light heavyweight fighters to ever step into the UFC octagon, elevated by the fact that neither man had ever been finished by knockout or submission. “Bones” changed all that Saturday night, connecting with a big left kick to the side of the head, taking the champ to the mat and raining down with a final series of punches that would end the bout.
After the fight, Jones took a second to thank an emotional Cormier, acknowledging his accomplishments as not only a fighter, but as a friend and a father. He then quickly turned his attention to the future, setting the Honda Center on fire with two simple words:
BROCK. LESNAR.
It had been rumored for the past few weeks that both Jones and current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar were interested in a potential Super Fight, possibly stemming from the enormous financial success that awaits Floyd Mayweather and Connor McGregor on August 26th. Jones added fuel to the fire Saturday night with a confident challenge stating, “if you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by someone who weighs forty pounds less than you, meet me in the octagon.”
Right now there’s no specific timetable for the proposed bout, with some suggesting it could take place before the end of 2017 and others reporting that it would be held off until Lesnar’s contract with WWE expires in 2018. That being said, WWE and UFC did manage to work out a last-minute deal in 2016 that allowed Brock to compete at UFC 200, where he defeated Mark Hunt in a decision that was later overturned due to testing positive for a banned substance.
