At Extreme Rules, Samoa Joe won the Fatal 5-Way match to become the No. 1 contender for the WWE Universal Championship and face Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire. On Raw, Joe heated things up when he attacked Lesnar’s advocate, Paul Heyman, locking him in the Coquina Clutch. As a result, Lesnar is now booked to appear for retribution on next week’s episode of Raw.
This match is one that Jim Ross has expressed his desire to see. In his recent blog, he stated that he endorsed a Lesnar vs. Joe match two years ago at his Ringside with Jim Ross event the night before WrestleMania 31 in San Jose, California, while Joe was a guest. Two years later, he gets his wish, and he expects the match to “receive plenty of hype over the next several weeks.”
Ross also explained his desire to call the match at the commentary booth.
“I am personally looking forward to this match as much as any match I can recall this year and will tell you that it is an announcer’s dream to be privileged to call a bout like this.
Yep, I’m fishing here.”
Outside of calling the Undertaker vs. Roman Reigns match at WrestleMania 33 and the Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago, Ross has made sure to let his fans know that he would not be a frequent commentator, but play the role of a guest commentator to add a valuable dynamic to the match. If Ross is able to lobby successfully, his commentating would add more of a “big fight” feel to the match.
