Speaking of The Rock, his Moana character Maui has been met will a bit of controversy since being introduced, with some groups saying the appearance of the character is falsely promoting Polynesian stereotypes.
Earlier this summer, it was reported that there were some people who felt the character misrepresents a strong Maui by having him appear overweight. Now, Yahoo News has an article about a Maui Halloween costume that has been pulled by Disney after some Pacific Islanders complained about it, comparing it to ‘blackface’ for Polynesians. The article goes on to say that the Maui character is being made fun of instead of being celebrated, featuring quotes from Pacific Islanders who do not agree with the portrayal.
