Why The WWE Battleground Title Match Legitimized Dean Ambrose Title Run, Bayley’s Status, Orton Promo

My Monday column for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is all reaction to WWE Battleground. Here’s an excerpt:

Banks is known as the “legit boss,” and you could see legit happiness in her face as soon as Bayley’s music hit and the Verizon Center exploded as if the Capitals finally advanced past the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The match was well done between Banks, Bayley and Charlotte. All three possess great talent and chemistry. Charlotte’s tag partner Dana Brooke has unfortunately provided me several cringe-worthy moments out of fear for her or her opponent’s safety. She was brought to the “main roster” quicker than most due to some creative needs to fill after injury and plans changed. She’s in a pressure-filled spot with less experience than those she is working with. I recognize the situation she’s in, but still find myself in a moment of concern often when she’s involved.

A lot of questions were raised about why JBL kept saying “one night only” with this match and what it means for Bayley. I think it’s because she’s going to pull some double duty until SummerSlam weekend, working both NXT while RAW and SmackDown management fight over signing her to their show exclusively.

Randy Orton sure looked like a veteran who has had 9 months to rest and recharge the batteries. Full of life. Full of interest again. Good “talk me into the building” promo about him versus Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Knowing his personality and courage behind the scenes, the “no enhancement needed” line that took a shot at Brock Lesnar’s recent failed drug test with UFC, I’m guessing was not in the script. I guess better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
