WATCH: New WWE Champion Crowned, The Shield Implode! WWE Money in the Bank 2016 Review

All of the ref bumps, both Roman Reigns and John Cena lose on the same night, and a new WWE Champion is crowned…twice. WrestleTalk’s Oli Davis reviews WWE’s Money in the Bank 2016 PPV/Network Special thingy.

THE NEW DAY BEAT CASS & ENZO VS THE VAUDEVILLIANS VS GALANDERSON

The PPV, Network Special thingy opened with a fatal fourway tag match, which saw New Day retain against Cass and Enzo, The Vaudevillians and Galanderson. I really enjoyed this match, but the finish had an awkward…

..ti-

…timing issue.

There was a moment when Luke Gallows just stood there for a while looking at Big E, stumbling around like he was in dazed mode on THQ’s Smackdown Just Bring It video game. Retro reference. The delay meant that when Aidan English was eventually pinned, it felt like he’d been taken out by the Magic Killer on the pre-show, making him look pretty weak.

In fact, the Vaudevillians only seemed to be in there to take the loss, while Galanderson were only involved to break up close pinfalls.

BARON CORBIN BEAT DOLPH ZIGGLER

Speaking of pre-shows, what’s Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler doing on the actual pay per view?

This was the PPV’s longest running singles feud, with the bad blood starting way back on the night after Wrestlemania 32. They ended up having a pretty decent match, but hopefully that’s the end of it.

DANA BROOKE & CHARLOTTE BEAT BECKY LYNCH & NATALYA

Charlotte picked up the win, and Natalya did her usual crying stuff after the match…until she turned on Becky Lynch!

Heel Natalya. She could be a really good act with a Tyson Kidd valet/cat walker.

APOLLO CREWES BEAT SHEAMUS

A surprise roll-up gave Crewes the win. It’s hard to tell if Apollo was genuinely happy, as he’s always smiling.

AJ STYLES BEAT JOHN CENA

Styles and Cena told a really good story throughout the match, of John building up momentum, for AJ to then cut him off. It was all about searching for the one big move.

This built to the usual kicking out of finishers, and a neat sequence of reversals…until the ref bump! This let Cena get the visual pin, but Galanderson ran down to beat up John and give AJ the win.

A clean finish would’ve been more fitting for the quality of the match, but this is only their first encounter. This way a rematch is set up…for Cena to probably get back his win.

MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH

This was a relatively non-high flying Money in the Bank match, with my favourite spots being Cesaro swinging Jericho into a ladder and Sami Zayn’s Michinoku driver on Kevin Owens onto a ladder on its side – Owens looked like he had a broken back after that.

But after a very decent ladder match, with all six guys putting their bodies on the line, we had to have a Money in the Bank winner…Zack Ryder!

Nah, I’m kidding, it’s Dean Ambrose. More on which later…

RUSEV BEAT TITUS O’NEIL

Rusev and Titus O’Neil were stuck in the ‘let the audience catch their breath’ slot of the night, between the ladder match and the main event.

Poor super dad Titus tapped out to the Bulgarian Brute on Father’s Day. Rusev taunting the O’Neil kids at ringside afterwards suggests this feud isn’t over.
