When news broke this week that a Goldberg WWE 2k17 deal had been reached and the former WWE and WCW Champion will be the special pre-order name for this year’s game, immediate speculation began regarding a possible WWE return for Goldberg.
According to The Wrestling Observer, Goldberg’s deal to appear in the video game appears only to be with 2K Sports, and not with WWE. While Goldberg has appeared in past WWE video games, 2K has been trying to sign the former Champion to appear in the past few installments of the game, but it was Vince McMahon who nixed 2K’s past attempts to include Goldberg in the games.

Back in 2004, when Goldberg’s one year, $1 million deal with WWE expired, Goldberg left the company on bad terms, and his departure left Vince McMahon very negative on the former Champion. In fact, Vince was reportedly so negative on Goldberg, that when Vince had talks with UFC commentator Mike Goldberg about potentially signing with WWE, Vince wanted Goldberg to change his last name.
Additionally, back in 2003, the original plan for Goldberg’s arrival in WWE called for him to work a 3 match program with The Rock, which would have culminated in a match at WrestleMania. When The Rock’s movie career took off, however, The Rock was unable to commit to any further dates past him and Goldberg’s first match, so the program was cut short. Goldberg of course went on to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, and coincidentally Lesnar also gave WWE his notice shortly before the match, so it ended up being the final WWE match for Goldberg, and for that particular Lesnar – WWE run.
