On The Resurrection of Jake “The Snake” Roberts:
BH: I watched it and it’s a really an amazing piece of work. It’s a testimony to your friendship. Your big heart. Your kind heart. Your will power to not give up on him. It’s a credit to you. When I watch that movie I am so proud of you and what you have done with those guys. How hard you tried to stay with it and how you speak from the heart. You speak from the heart the whole time when you talk to the camera. Everything you’re doing has got your heart in the right place. You’ve always been a good guy. I’ve got nothing but respect. I remember when I had my cancer a few months ago or even going back to when I had my stroke. You were always someone who reached out and I don’t forget that. Having you on the show to talk about all of the great things you’ve done for Razor and Jake both. It’s an amazing story. I am glad you took the time and patience and dedication to stick through that filming process. You should get a medal for that. Kudos to you for a job well done.
DDP: Thank you, man. The film was… I always wanted to pay Jake back. I know that if it wasn’t for him helping me in the beginning of my career. I knew Jake from the nightclub days. That’s where I met him. I was running a club down in Fort Meyers, FL. When I got in as a manager and got the opportunity at WCW there weren’t any managing opportunities for five months. They wanted me to do color commentary. I knew my career was going to be over before it started. I always wanted to be a wrestler. Like you did Bret, I wanted it ever since I was a little kid. Then I got away from it and then I got pulled back in as a manager. Then I got to WCW and they have me color commentating. So I said, “To Hell with it. I am going down to the Power Plant and learning how to wrestle.” When I was there, for that first six months, Jake came in to the company. Right away we bonded from the nightclub days and he took me under his wing. Then I tore my rotator cuff and I got let go. He called me up and said, “Hey D, how are you doing? How is that shoulder?” I told him and he had split up with his wife I told him, “Why don’t you move in with me?” We had an extra room. I said I would be cool helping him out while he was divorcing his wife. He stayed with me for three months until he lost a twelve foot long black cobra in my house. (laughs)
