The Dog Wedding starring WWE NXT trainer Matt Bloom opened strong at the box office this past weekend in New York. The following press release was submitted to WrestleZone:

Grassroots Audience Lifts THE DOG WEDDING at U.S. Box Office
Underdog Lands in Top 5 in Revenue per Theater

Family Friendly Romcom Stars WWE’s Matthew Bloom,
Germany’s Best Actress Winner Rosalie Thomass & English Bulldogs

New York, NY – March 16, 2016:  Family friendly romcom THE DOG WEDDING, lifted by grassroots audience support, ran at the front of the box office pack on opening weekend. On one modest screen in NY, the indie placed Top 5 in revenue per theater for March 11-13, as reported by BoxOfficeMojo.com. By this measure that levels the playing field for all releases, the film finished just behind Disney’s ZOOTOPIA, which grossed $13,415 per theater, and ahead of 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and DEADPOOL.
THE DOG WEDDING will be extended for a second week at Cinema Village in NY, and expands to Beverly Hills on March 18 at Laemmle’s Music Hall. It is also available on iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play and VOD. A share of every ticket, disc and download sold benefits canine charities.

The film’s strong numbers result from grassroots audience support built around real-life married canine couples and fans of stars Rosalie Thomass (Best Actress winner in Germany making her U.S. debut) and WWE’s Matthew Bloom. The national audience includes:

1.       Over 3 million social media followers of the celebrity and rescue dogs whose wedding photos grace the movie’s unique opening credits. Dressed in tux and gown, these winners of the popular Dog Wedding Photo Contest include therapy pup Bocker, rescue ambassadogs Titus & Hailey, celebrity rescue Chloe Kardoggian and the inspirational Simon The Blind Pug.

2.       Support for Long Island Bulldog Rescue, which serves the Northeast and is the largest organization dedicated to saving English Bulldogs. LIBR receives a share of every ticket sold.

3.       Outreach to dog lovers and WWE NXT fans through high-engagement ads on Instagram. Plus a measure of good luck in the form of a shout-out from contest voterSarah Jessica Parker!

Director’s Statement
“I wanted to recreate the light hearted feeling I got watching the romantic comedies of my youth, but stay true to my craft as an independent filmmaker who blends fiction with reality.  My first film TIJUANA MAKES ME HAPPY, which won Slamdance 2007, was made with all non-actors. For THE DOG WEDDING, I cast a professional wrestler with Germany’s Best Actress winner, two lovable bulldogs and the people of Arizona to make a film about the struggles of becoming your own person and making the family of your choosing no matter their background.”
– James Lefkowitz, Director, THE DOG WEDDING
