As we previously noted, the Raw and Smackdown announce teams have been changed up, and of note is the company’s decision to move Jerry “The King” Lawler to the Smackdown brand from Raw. WWE noted the PPV announce team will remain JBL, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.
In a follow-up to the above news, we then reported WWE has been wanting to remove Lawler from the Raw announce team for awhile now, but following his heart attack WWE felt the time was not right to make the move. With Smackdown then switching nights to Thursdays, WWE saw this as a perfect opportunity to “freshen up” the announce teams and also move Lawler off Raw.
The Wrestling Observer is reporting that the backstage feeling in WWE is Lawler’s move to Smackdown is WWE’s way of beginning to phase him out of the TV picture, as the company is very age-conscious when it comes to its TV performers.
