Lots of Notes from Last Night’s Ring of Honor iPPV: New World Champ Ties Record, Title Match Changed at Last Minute, Kevin Steen Note & More

roh tv tapingLast night Ring of Honor held their annual “All Star Extravaganza” event, live on iPPV from Toronto, Ontario. The biggest news coming out of the event is that Jay Briscoe defeated Michael Elgin in what most would consider to be an upset victory, becoming the new ROH World Champion. Briscoe is just the second person ever, in the 12 year history of the title, to win it twice. The only other man to do so was Austin Aries, first in 2004 and then again in 2009.

One of the most promoted matches for the show was a TV Championship match between ACH and champion Jay Lethal, that was to be fought without time limits, following their 30-minute draw on television several weeks ago. However, due to travel issues, ACH was not able to attend the show. At the last minute, ACH was replaced with Cedric Alexander, who fought a good match and came close to winning, but ultimately Lethal retained.

Kazarian and Christopher Daniels, known as “Bad Influence” in TNA, are now being called “The Addiction” in Ring of Honor.

IWGP Champion AJ Styles defeated Adam Cole in one of the best matches of the night. It was the first time the two had ever been in singles action against one another.

Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis both announced that Matt Hardy would be returning to Ring of Honor. They did not give a date for his return, but it will be interesting to see what happens, as he’s currently working with TNA.

The ROH Tag Team Championship match actually went on last at the iPPV, instead of the World Championship. The idea was probably not to end a show in Canada with a Canadian champion losing and dropping the title. ReDRagon and the Young Bucks instead took the main event slot with their two-out-of-three falls match, in what was one of the best tag matches you’re likely to see all year long. Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish retained.
