The caring paediatrician swaps his stethoscope for a lycra outfit to become a wise-cracking fighter called Dirk Feelgood.
The 26-year-old, from Worsley, Salford, has been juggling a hospital career with his wrestling hobby for three years.
He got his big break last month when he fought in front of 3,500 screaming fans at a star-studded wrestle festival in Coventry.
Wearing his trademark green and yellow spandex suit, “Dirk” whipped the crowd into a frenzy with his all-action style and cheeky wise-cracks.
The show featured a host of American wrestling legends, including former WWE Intercontinental champion D-Lo Brown.
Andrew, who works at Ormskirk General Hospital, said: “I put up a good show and really got the crowd going, but my opponent was that little bit too tough in the end. It was great fun and entertainment though.”It’s not the kind of thing I imagine most doctors do in their spare time, but I’ve loved wrestling since I was a kid and I always said I wanted to have at least one match in the ring myself.
“It’s about as far removed from being a doctor as you can get, and I’ve been the butt of one or two jokes at work, but my colleagues think it’s all good fun and a laugh. I’m just lucky enough to be doing the two things I really enjoy.”
Andrew, 5ft 9 and around 13 stone, began wrestling at a club in Stoke while studying medicine at Liverpool University.
When the Future-Shock Wrestling School opened at Salah’s Martial Arts Gym, in Beswick, Manchester, earlier this year, Andrew signed up.
He said: “My mum and dad just thought I was being stupid when I first told them I had started wrestling, but now they come and watch me and really like it.
“I’m not the biggest guy in the ring, but Dirk is a very animated character who really gets the crowd going with all his wise-cracks.
“Some people suggested I call myself Dr Feelgood, but I thought Dirk was a bit funnier and so went with that.”
— Feelgood, along with fellow British wrestlers James Tighe and Darren Burridge have recorded a segment for hit afternoon talk show “Richard and Judy”, but as is common with pre-recorded segments on the show, it has been put back from its original airdate of last Tuesday to some time in the coming weeks.
