PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
After two months of waiting, tomorrow (Sunday 22nd May 2005) IPW:UK present to you their fifth show, “Best of British 2”. Started with the aim of proving the best of one particular field, the Heavyweights, Best of British is now home to the whole diverse roster.
For more information on any of the IPW:UK superstars, or any past events referenced below, check out the official website at www.ipwuk.com.
Best of British: Heavyweights
5 Way Elimination; Scramble Rules
The Zebra Kid vs. James Tighe vs. Martin Stone vs. [Andy Boy Simmonz OR ‘Thee’ Drew Galloway] vs. [Somebody Announced On The Evening]
When the original Best of British match was created back for BOB1 in January, the rules were simple. Two men in the ring at any one time, 5 participants, elimination and scramble rules. This means that if somebody leaves the ring, you do not even have to tag them in order to replace them in the match! The winner will also become the second #1 contender to the IPW:UK title, alongside the winner of the Make or Break Ladder match (see below).
The Zebra Kid, originally slated to make his debut at Extreme Measures back in September of 2004, will make his debut tomorrow – better late than never! A former WAW heavyweight champion, the Zebra Kid has a strong connection with the crowd around him. Very much a favorite to take home the prize and become one of the #1 contenders to the IPW:UK title at his first attempt.
James Tighe is another debutant in the Best of British match – the Chichester based technician knows his way around the squared circle like no other. Teaming up with the GHC tag champions Doug Williams and Scorpio to take on the impressive team of Misawa, Ogawa and Suzuki at the UK Wrestling Channel’s inaugural supershow this past March, many are tipping Tighe to be the next big UK star to break the world map. Will he arm himself with another national accolade tomorrow?
Martin Stone is the only firm qualifier in the match who has faced off on an IPW:UK card before. Making an impressive debut at Best of British 1 by destroying the ‘Luchas’, the referee, a fan in the crowd and anybody who got in his way, Martin Stone then went on to hold his own solidly in a 20-minute time limit draw against former RoH champion, Samoa Joe, this past March. Armed with the ‘Charming’ one, Don Charles at his side, the ‘Enforcer’ Stone will be looking to use his IPW experience as a key factor in getting past the more recognised UK names around him.
Joining the three main contenders in this match will be one of either Drew Galloway (w/ Charles Boddington), making his second IPW:UK appearance, or one of the few ever presents on an IPW:UK card so far, Andy Boy Simmonz. Both men will square off earlier in the evening to decide who takes that final place.
And finally, a mystery participant. Much like at BOB1 where Dragon Pheonix was the lucky entrant into the main event, one man will be plucked from the show itself based on their performance on the card, and given the option (and it is optional…) to perform again in the main event of the evening.
The Make or Break Ladder Match
‘New Superstar’ Stevie Douglas vs. Aviv Maayan
Career vs. Title Shot
Douglas, a student of the game and former pupil of such luminaries as former RoH champion Samoa Joe, and British legend Robbie Brookside, made his first IPW:UK appearance at Show 2!, first facing off against and defeating Leon Lionheart, and then acting as the second for Robbie Brookside in his main event spectacular. After the match however, Douglas turned on his mentor and revealed himself as the mastermind behind the International Man of Mystery gimmick that Andy Simmonz had been portraying himself under. In January, Douglas faced off against Tony Sefton and defeated him, before making his presence felt in the original Best of British match, attacking winner Aviv Maayan on the basis that he felt excluded as part of the stipulations (being British) prevent him from being a part of the proceedings.
The wXw Light-Heavyweight champion himself, Douglas felt that it’s only right that he had his chance to prove himself against the other high flyers in IPW. This led to his involvement in the Tornado Tag match at Return of the Dragon, where he and Super Dragon teamed to take on the amazing El Generico, and Maayan.
Defeated in that match, Douglas returned to cost Maayan an amazing and well deserved victory over Super Dragon, leading to tomorrow’s contest. Should Aviv Maayan win, Stevie Douglas will be FIRED from IPW:UK. However, should Stevie Douglas win, Douglas becomes one of the two #1 contenders for the IPW:UK title AND can lay claim to be the best high flyer in Britain! Armed with Tarquin Bayle at his side, the numbers game is in Stevie Douglas’ court.
A first in IPW:UK, this ladder match could well be the complete show stealer – beware if you’re in attendance, this could get messy!
‘Sadistic’ Jack Storm vs. ???
Originally scheduled to be Jack Storm vs. Tony ‘Superstar’ Sefton, this match changed earlier this week after news broke about an injury to the Superstar in training.
While the Superstar will still be in attendance to give fans the low-down on how serious his injury is, Jack Storm is now left without an opponent. A match will go ahead, and with Spud lobbying hard to be Storm’s opponent, smart money would go on that match. Everything rests on IPW management’s last minute decision.
6-Man Tag Ghetto Brawl
The Chav Army (Flaming Red, Battalion & Nixon) vs. Ashe, Kris Linnell & A Mystery Partner
The Chav’s; a faction formed through similar lifestyles and attitudes. Ready for a fight whenever and wherever, and headed up by the cocky ginger ninja Flaming Red. Coming fresh off a somewhat unresolved feud with the ‘Hardcore Icon’ Paul Travell, Red has caught the hardcore bug, and challenged the three men he despises to a Ghetto Brawl this time out. While Travell was unable to take his place in the match, Ashe and Linnell agreed and have said they will be taking open invitations to join them!
Ashe and Linnel became a team for the first time last time out, and the impressive duo made a big impact with what would probably be considered an upset victory over the Chav’s. Out for revenge this time, and with gang rule in effect in this six man tag, the Chav’s will once again be favorites, but can Ashe & Linnell once again slay the dragons? This is Nixon’s IPW:UK in-ring debut, and Battalion’s second outing.
Also in action;
The debuting Chris Wyld, will take on a fellow debutant in Eamon O’Neill, as these two chiselled brawlers look to impress on their first outings in Orpington.
The final match on tonight’s show rundown is a triple threat between Paul Robinson (who made his first IPW appearance at Return of the Dragon) and the debuting duo of El Ligero and Ashley Reed. Reed, from the same Dropkixx training center as Robinson, narrowly missed out on a match in March, but doesn’t miss out this time. Ligero, a northern-based flyer, will be looking to ensure that he doesn’t travel hours for nothing, and takes home a guaranteed return booking in the promotion.
Also in attendance will be the high flying sensation Spud and cult hit foreigner, “Jake”!
— Our referees for the evening will be Chris Hatch and Andy Quildan, timekeeper Sarah Baraclough and our Master of Ceremonies shall be ‘Hardcore’ John Atkins.
