As noted over the weekend, Marijuana has been added to the list of substances tested for under WWE’s evolving Wellness Policy. The main reason for the decision to test for pot is WWE’s upcoming Congressional hearings. Explaining to Congress why they do not test for pot is not something they wanted to do. It is very likely that a Wellness violation for pot would result in a lesser penalty than other violations. Instead of being suspended for 30 or 60 days, the offender would be fined instead. While this is not a popular decision among wrestlers who use the drug, they agree a modest fine is better than suspension and realize there has to be a happy medium.
In what is a very major news update on the Congress/WWE drug testing issue, Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying that WWE’s drug testing policy is “not worth a flip,” as it took a district attorney in Albany, NY little work to find out the names of people ordering illegal substances from Signature Pharmacy, while WWE themselves couldn’t do that. “We asked them for their testing information; what they came back with was not sufficient,” said Stearns. He also adds that WWE didn’t send an actual copy of their policy, or any other details as far as random testing, threshold levels, and employee check ups on post-dated prescriptions were sent. Stears claimed he has WWE’s attention now and believes hearings will begin in late September, or early October.
