Kevin McElvaney’s Take on ECW – January 1, 2008 edition

After a brief hiatus, I’m back with another take on ECW on Sci-Fi. This week’s ECW picked up where the last left off. If you read my last ECW take, you’ll know that I wasn’t too keen on the way things ended in that one. Let’s see how the show fared this week.

There was an in-ring segment with both CM Punk and Chavo Guerrero. Chavo explained why he attacked Punk before and told him he wanted a title shot. Armanda Estrada made a match for the end of the night to give Chavo a chance to qualify. This did fine for setting up the main event.

Up next was a six person tag match: Jimmy Yang, Shannon Moore, and Kelly Squared against Miz, Morrison, and Layla The.

Some comedy, some good spots. Showcased two feuds at once which, in this case, was a good thing. I say “in this case,” because we all know that some shows *cough* TNA! *cough* tend to bundle too many programs together, which causes focus to shift away from all of them. The girls were used sparingly in this match, which was probably good, because they still need some time to grow as in-ring performers.

The faces won. Good segment.

Colin OLSEN (wrestling again as Delaney) told Tazz that his New Year’s resolution was to be a WWE Superstar. He had another chance, this time against Big Daddy V. Colin had very little luck this time, but he managed to make Big Daddy V look very effective.

Shelton Benjamin vs. K.C. James. Oddly enough, they keep announcing him as James Curtis and never play up his tag team run on Smackdown. This episode of ECW is looking an awful lot like an old episode of Saturday morning Superstars in some respects!

Shelton continues to look very intense and racks up another win.

Punk vs. Chavo was the main event. These two have some good chemistry together. Punk won the match by count-out, narrowly beating Chavo back into the ring after the action went outside of it.

This was a good ending, in that Chavo looks credible, but can realistically be put out of main event competition for the moment – due to the loss. We’ll see if this actually happens.

Solid, though not-too-exciting episode of ECW, this week. Still, it did a great job of continuing to push several key wrestlers, which is not a bad thing at all.

The first ECW broadcast of the year gets a 6/10.
