Feature: Steve Anderson Tries An Awards Gimmick

In a continuing effort to secure my very own gimmick, I’m trying an “awards angle.” For me, this week has provided a plethora of the moronic, clueless and tasteless. Mind you, I don’t have a name for these awards as of yet and the trophy place wanted too much for plaques. Let’s just go with “Moron of the Week” and a couple of runners-up. If you can come up with a better name, lemme know.

Second runner-up

Dale GagneR, my favorite punching bag. In spite of his bravado and boasts, he got his a$$ handed to him by WWE legal counsel. Continuing to suck the marrow out of the bones of the once-great AWA legacy, GagneR has come up dry, no matter how much he claims otherwise. Now, according to The WZ, the AWA Superstars website is no more.

As you can tell, I have little, if any respect for him. I have dealt with him and I can count many wrestlers who have worked for him. No matter how fancy his website may be. No matter how many big names he can secure for shows. No matter who many fancy suits he stuffs his bulbous frame into; he’s still one of those promoters on the periphery of this business. The kind that Bill Behrens has to “out” from time to time. Hopefully, his mockery of the AWA history can end and he will abide by a judge’s ruling.

First runner-up

The individual who created the insert for WWE’s “History of the Intercontinental Championship on DVD.” I am going through an advanced copy for review on The WZ. At first blush, it looks nice. A collage of former IC champs is featured that include Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Kerry Von Erich, the British Bulldog, and Buddy Roberts. What? Buddy Roberts? Sure enough, the most prominent figure on the insert is the former Freebird himself. He is wearing a belt that is similar to the WWF belt of the seventies worn by Billy Graham and Bob Backlund.

Problem: he never won the IC title and I don’t think he ever wrestled for it. And, in the picture, he’s not wearing any version of the strap.

Seriously. Who fell asleep at that switch? Look, I know the new “pure entertainment” direction is off and running and history can take a flying leap. But IC champion Buddy Roberts getting the lion’s share of the foldout? Are you serious? Not even close.

Moron of the Week

Ok, I’ll tread carefully here. It goes to “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Don’t get me wrong. I admire any man who faces cancer head-on and wins. I have lost family members and friends to the horrid disease. But to use your illness as a defense for toking up in front of your fans is despicable. Piper, there are many people who actually have to smoke MEDICINAL marijuana. The effects of their treatments are too much to bear.

You? You theatrically took perhaps one of the longer drags this side of a Cheech and Chong movie while people cheered you on and the cameras rolled. Later, you took a hit off a bong offered to you by a fan in the audience. Again, the cameras were rolling. Hardly treatment and not therapeutic. Maybe you do use medicinal marijuana following your bout with cancer, but on that night, you were partying, not medicating. And now you’re covering your old a$$. Shame on you.
