WWE Champion Cody Rhodes may be getting ready for a huge title defense against Gunther at Clash in Italy, but there is one rivalry he still can’t stop thinking about: his losing streak against R-Truth.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Rhodes joked about his long history of losses to R-Truth, dating all the way back to his days as “Dashing” Cody Rhodes and later Stardust.
Cody Rhodes wants to finish his story with R-Truth
The American Nightmare still hasn’t forgotten any of it.
“Ron Killings has been ducking me, and I whispered in his ear two weeks ago that I never forget anything. And he made my life a living hell when I was ‘Dashing’ Cody Rhodes, when I was Stardust. And I think he has got like thirty-some victories on me,” Rhodes said.
He then took the joke even further by saying his famous “finish the story” catchphrase was never really about winning the WWE Championship. Instead, he claimed the real goal has always been finally beating R-Truth.
“Finishing the story, the term we have and Michael Cole coined at WWE really wasn’t about winning the WWE Title, it’s about beating Ron, beating Truth. And when I do that, I will be complete, I can sleep at night after I beat Truth. I can. I’m very petty,” Rhodes added.
The history between them goes back more than a decade, mostly during WWE house shows and live events. During the late 2000s and early 2010s, Truth regularly picked up wins over Rhodes while he was using both his “Dashing” and Stardust characters.
Over time, their win-loss record became a fan-favorite joke online, especially because Rhodes keeps bringing it up in interviews and podcasts.
For now, though, Rhodes has a much bigger challenge waiting for him. The WWE Champion is set to defend his title against Gunther at Clash in Italy on May 31.
