Charlotte Flair almost made her WWE return with a completely new character after the biggest injury of her career. The former women’s champion recently revealed that she pitched a darker version of “The Queen” during her comeback, but WWE never used the idea.
Flair suffered a serious knee injury in December 2023 during a match against Asuka on SmackDown. She tore her ACL, MCL, and meniscus, which forced her to miss more than a year of action. She finally made her comeback at the 2025 Royal Rumble.
Flair won the Rumble and earned a title shot for WrestleMania 41. But before returning, Flair had a very different idea for her character.
Charlotte Flair pitched a darker character following her WWE injury layoff
Speaking on Ringer Wrestling, Flair said she wanted to completely change her look and attitude after coming back from her injuries. Instead of the usual blonde Queen, she pitched a darker and more evil version of the character.
“I really wanted to come back different from the knee injury. Like I did this whole pitch where I wanted to come back with dark hair and the black robe and be the dark evil queen. And that obviously did not happen. Because I was like, when you think of the name Flair, it’s synonymous with blonde. So, how could I come back…? Who’s to say I won’t do that later down the road? But I really tried to change the robe so you just didn’t get classic Charlotte,” Flair said.
Even though WWE passed on the idea for now, Flair’s comments show she is still interested in changing and evolving her character in the future.
Her recovery process was also one of the toughest periods of her career. After the injury, Flair went through major knee surgery and spent more than a year rehabbing. The recovery was difficult, especially because she was also dealing with marital issues.
Flair finally returned in January 2025. Winning the Royal Rumble instantly pushed her back into the WWE Women’s Championship picture and set up a WrestleMania 41 match against Tiffany Stratton. However, Flair lost the match.
