Tony Khan says Mariah May and Toni Storm are capable of main-eventing, and any of the last four matches could have headlined AEW Revolution.
The decision to have the world title match between Cope and Jon Moxley headline AEW Revolution over the “Hollywood Ending” match between Mariah May and Toni Storm sparked a lot of controversy, and it was one of the major talking points coming out of the show.
At the AEW Revolution post-show media scrum, Tony Khan commented on the decision to not have Mariah May’s match with Toni Storm main event the show.
“I thought that was absolutely fantastic,” Tony Khan said. “Absolutely, they are both main event quality wrestlers, and we talked about Grand Slam Australia, which I thought was probably the best TV show we’ve ever done, start to finish, and in that case, I thought we put together a great show with great moments, and for where we were going next, I thought it made a lot of sense. But also for where they had been, I felt like that’s a fantastic main event. And at the middle of the show, the crossover, the halfway point, great moment and great match to have Adam Copeland return to Australia. The way the show was built, there were great moments throughout, but I thought Toni and Mariah in Australia had a fantastic main event.
“Tonight, they delivered. It was absolutely fantastic, great match. I really, really believed in it, and I really believe in the story, which is the culmination of a really long plan and just an absolutely fantastic series of events, and absolutely, that’s a match that’s capable of main eventing, just like in Australia, the Hollywood Ending of the match at Wembley Stadium, all world title main event level matches, and in particular, their match that did main event Grand Slam Australia was one of the great main events on my all-time favorite TV show. So, so many great matches and moments along the way, including main events.
Tony Khan On AEW Revolution’s Closing Four
Khan continued by reiterating that he thought AEW Revolution was a great show from start to finish, and he thought that any of the last four matches could have main evented.
“I do think tonight’s show was one of the best start to finish we ever did, so hindsight’s always 20/20, but to me, putting it back and looking back on it, it’s one of my all-time favorite shows, so I was really happy with it. I was sharing the stage earlier with Swerve Strickland. Toni Storm was in no condition to come up here, she’s lost a lot of blood, and it was I thought a great moment for Swerve, who one year ago won the championship at Dynasty, to have that moment and have the crowd come back and do the ‘Who’s House? Swerve’s House?’ To be fair, they didn’t know they would see him again after what happened with Swerve and Ricochet. So it was a big reaction, and certainly, the crowd got behind Swerve at the end too. So I thought, start to finish, it was a great show, and certainly I thought that would be a great main event.
“I also thought in particular, there were a lot of matches that could have been the main event, including any of the last four. That’s why I really called it a big closing four because I really felt like these final matches, to say these are all gonna be huge matches with massive significance, and knowing that we had the Hollywood Ending, Kenny Omega returning, his first pay-per-view match in AEW in over a year, his first time challenging for a championship in AEW in over a year, to have then the Steel Cage match with Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher, and that has also been a great story they’ve told, and they’ve been in different positions on the card as well. Then to have Mox and Cope, again, really four great matches, and they had been in that crossover position at Grand Slam Australia, where I thought Toni and Mariah had that great main event on that great show. So I really felt like any of the final four matches could have stood out there as the main event. In particular, knowing that Swerve is waiting in the wings, he’s the number one contender, we’re heading into Dynasty. I also had a feeling that the crowd would really get behind seeing Swerve at the end of the show. Very happy to see the crowd get behind him. I thought the show was fantastic, start to finish.”
