Kamille and Damaris Lewis Highlight The Most Important Message To Take Away From ‘Queen of the Ring’

Kamille and Damaris Lewis highlight the prominent theme in Queen of the Ring.

The pair spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about their new film about Mildred Burke and women’s wrestling called Queen of the Ring. Kamille (billed as Kailey Latimer) portrays June Byers, while Lewis plays Babs Wingo.

Damaris Lewis explained what she wants people to take away from the film after seeing it, highlighting how things are much different today than in Burke’s era. Lewis said that you can achieve anything if you block out the noise and stay focused on your goals.

“The biggest thing at the moment is the importance of locking in and turning off the noise. I think in today’s day and age, there’s so much stimulation,” Lewis said. “We can see what so many people are doing, but we can’t see what they did to get there. Doubt is running rampant because you get on your phone and see what she’s doing, what he’s doing, and the success they have, what kind of bag she has. How much money they have, or how much money they don’t have.”

“The thing to remember when you watch this movie is that they didn’t have any of that, and they still did it,” Lewis continued. “None of it. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t always fun, but this movie shows you that it’s possible. So if you have a dream about anything, I want you to watch this movie and know that if you lock in and never lose sight of that thing, anything is possible.”

Kamille says Queen Of The Ring promotes unity and overcoming personal struggles

Kamille, a former NWA Women’s Champion like Burke, says that Queen of the Ring promotes women banding together and helping each other through hard times. Instead of fighting each other backstage, the women from Burke’s era built each other up and showed that you don’t have to be in a fight by yourself.

“I would say this applies to both males and females, but especially with this movie coming out around International Women’s Day or weekend. I’m sure you understand, that in wrestling and the dirt sheets, they want the clickbait titles, the drama, the gossip, and everything happening in the locker room. But this movie shows that women, especially when they’re going through hard times in life like we all have—not necessarily the exact same struggles—but in this movie, wrestling itself, life itself, is hard enough,” she explained.

“These women, instead of looking at each other as competition and trying to one-up each other, they banded together. You’ll see that in so many scenes where they have each other’s back and are there for one another,” Kamille continued. “That’s how they got through all the crap that wrestling throws at them. And that’s not just in wrestling—that’s in life in general. If you come together, everything won’t be easy, but at least you won’t be alone.”
