Report: Rey Fenix Expected To Head To WWE Imminently Following AEW Exit

Rey Fenix is now a free agent, but he reportedly won’t be for long.

On March 3rd, Mike Johnson of PWInsider and other outlets reported that Fenix was no longer with AEW after he had been removed from the company’s roster page. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer wrote that the belief is that Fenix would “be in WWE ASAP.” A new report provides an update on the situation.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) reports that Rey Fenix is indeed a free agent. Per Sapp, though it was expected that he could have months added to his AEW deal due to injury time, he is no longer under contract with them, so he’s free to sign anywhere. Sapp cites sources who said that Fenix is expected to sign with WWE imminently, and Fanatics have started preparing merchandise for him, while creative is coming up with ideas as well.

The report also notes that those in WWE expect Fenix there, and it was a “foregone conclusion” that he would end up in the company. Sapp writes that Fenix would likely join the main roster with his brother and tag team partner, Penta. Penta signed with WWE and debuted in January following his own AEW departure.

More Details

As previously reported, Rey Fenix and Penta were likely heading to WWE in 2024, but their deals were extended when AEW heard that they were in talks with WWE. Fenix made allegations about “inhumane treatment” in since-deleted tweets, and AEW denied his claims privately. Sapp cites AEW sources who said they believed that Fenix likely would have had to agree to a non-disparagement to get out of the deal.

Fenix, a former AEW World Tag Team Champion and ROH World Tag Team Champion, has been absent from AEW programming since July 2024. Sapp writes that there had not been substantial creative plans pitched for Fenix in the recent months ahead of his departure.

WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
