A new report provides an update on Rey Fenix and Malakai Black, who have been linked to WWE in recent months.
In January, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) reported that Black was believed to be finishing up with AEW. Subsequent reports have stated that he was expected to be heading back to WWE. On February 10th, Black was reportedly let out of his AEW contract, per Sapp. Fenix has been absent from AEW programming since July 2024. Injury time was added to his deal when he was reportedly expected to sign with WWE.
In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Melter reported that Black would likely be returning to WWE imminently. He also stated that they were making plans for Rey Fenix, though his AEW departure has not been confirmed.
“Aleister Black should be returning [to WWE] imminently,” Meltzer wrote. “They are making plans for Rey Fenix although there has been no confirmation Fenix has been released from his AEW contract.” (H/t F4WOnline.com)
Rey Fenix has been with AEW since 2019. During his time with the company, he has held the AEW World Tag Team Championship, the ROH World Tag Team Championship, and the AEW World Trios Championship. He also held the AEW International Championship. Fenix’s brother and tag team partner Penta has signed with WWE. He made his debut in January, and he has become a featured member of the roster.
Black previously had a run in WWE as Malakai Black. He signed with AEW in 2021 following his WWE release. He later won the AEW World Trios Championship.
