Joey Janela Provides Update On Match Against Sabu Following Surgery

Joey Janela says his match with Sabu could potentially get postponed.

At The People vs. GCW, Janela announced that he would face Sabu in the ECW legend’s last match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9. However, Janela recently underwent surgery for a bicep tear, leaving the status of the match in doubt.

In a tweet, Janela responded to a fan who suggested that Rob Van Dam could replace him in the match. He wrote that if he wasn’t wrestling on the show, Sabu wouldn’t either. Janela stated that even if he had to create a new Joey Janela show for the summer, the match belonged to him, and he didn’t deserve to have it taken from him.

Janela also responded to ask him about the chances that he would be wrestling on the show, and he wrote, “The chances maybe 2%.”

WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.

Joey Janela On Sabu

Janela recently discussed his match against Sabu during an appearance on Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds.

“Sabu, I don’t know where his mind is at right now. I know he wants to do the match. He hasn’t wrestled in a few years. I know he’s a big fan of mine and GCW. We didn’t start off on always the same page. We had a match in like 2016, they did a documentary on YouTube, ‘Please Don’t Die,’ that was the focal point of the documentary, Sabu was like beat to death in this situation and couldn’t get it done in the ring.

“The match just didn’t go the way we planned. It was like, ‘Fuck. Never meet your idols, never wrestle your idols.’ At that point, I was like, ‘Fuck this guy.’ Later years, we’ve become tight. Hanging out in Las Vegas, we have mutual friends and it’s fucking Sabu. If anyone was going to get his last match, it was going to be me. I said, ‘I’ll get you through it, Sabu.’ He goes, ‘No, I’ll get you through it.’ That’s what I want to do here. He said he wants it to be his greatest match of all time. It could be.” (H/t Fightful for the transcription.)
