Kayla Braxton revealed that Vince McMahon didn’t let anybody read off a teleprompter in WWE.
Braxton (Kayla Becker) left WWE last year after eight years with the WWE. She worked as a backstage interviewer and host of shows like The Bump, proving to be a valuable member of the WWE roster.
Kayla Braxton recently spoke with After We Wrap where they discussed the details of working backstage in the WWE. She revealed that Vince McMahon “does not believe in teleprompters” and would rather hand her 17 scripts throughout the day to memories.
“In WWE, Vince McMahon does not believe in teleprompters. Oh my gosh, absolutely not—everything is off the cuff. When I did backstage interviews, that was scripted. I would get a script beforehand. The scripts would change 17 times in a night,” she explained. “They kept handing me scripts, and I was like, ‘Stop handing me these until we’re about to go live because I don’t want to memorize all this!'”
Becker said that talent still needs to know their stuff and be on their game. This was evident in one of her final interviews with LA Knight, who went off-script during their segment.
“I was very tired—we had just gotten back from France, I think—so I was jetlagged. He went totally off-script, and my brain just froze on camera. I could have just said ‘Yeah,’ but I didn’t want to do that. So yeah, those interviews were very scripted.
“But when I hosted The Bump, my morning show, that was different. I had bullet points, but I had to bring my own knowledge. Like, ‘Oh, I knew you grew up liking this’ or ‘Back in 2004, you wrestled at this indie show.’ That’s the kind of stuff you have to know,” Kayla Braxton said.
