The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes could be modern WWE’s equivalent to Vince McMahon and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin’s feud, according to Dave Meltzer.
The wrestling insider offered his thoughts on the storyline during the latest Wrestling Observer Radio episode. According to Meltzer, he believed that The Rock’s return was to kickstart a feud with Cody reminiscent of the Attitude Era’s Stone Cold vs. Mr. McMahon storyline.
The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes would have ‘better’ matches than Vince McMahon and Stone Cold
“I got the impression he was coming back to be Mr. McMahon and try to make Cody Rhodes his Steve Austin,” Meltzer told his co-host Bryan Alvarez.
When Alvarez noted that Vince McMahon would have matches with Stone Cold, Meltzer replied: “Ultimately, [The Rock] could too. I would trust that he would do a better job in a match than Vince McMahon did.”
When discussing The Rock’s packed schedule, Meltzer noted: “He’s got other things in his life to do. But it’s WrestleMania season, he could be around building up to ‘Mania.”

The Rock’s return promo during last Friday’s WWE SmackDown raised a lot of eyebrows. Viewers were confused by the wrestler-turned-actor’s comments, where he claimed that he wanted Cody’s “soul” and for the WWE Champion to become “my champion.” A WWE worker reportedly compared the promo the Big Show’s repeated heel and face turns.
While there has been speculation that the promo was building to a match between the pair, The Rock noted that the confrontation didn’t need to end in a match. This has led to rumors that Cody is being lined up to be Rock’s “Corporate Champion,” and that he could potentially turn heel at WrestleMania 42.
An alternative angle that has been positioned is Cody denying Rock’s odd advances, and another WWE Superstar becoming Rock’s right-hand man. John Cena and CM Punk are two names that have been raised as potential future heel turns, given that both could potentially face Cody at WrestleMania.
