Joey Janela discusses his upcoming match with Sabu.
ECW legend Sabu is set to face Joey Janela in his last match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9. The match was set up at The People vs. GCW, where Sabu confronted Janela, who agreed to face him. Sabu has not wrestled since 2021, but he has previously expressed his intent to have a retirement match.
In an interview with Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds, Joey Janela commented on the upcoming match.
“Sabu, I don’t know where his mind is at right now. I know he wants to do the match. He hasn’t wrestled in a few years. I know he’s a big fan of mine and GCW. We didn’t start off on always the same page. We had a match in like 2016, they did a documentary on YouTube, ‘Please Don’t Die,’ that was the focal point of the documentary, Sabu was like beat to death in this situation and couldn’t get it done in the ring.
“The match just didn’t go the way we planned. It was like, ‘Fuck. Never meet your idols, never wrestle your idols.’ At that point, I was like, ‘Fuck this guy.’ Later years, we’ve become tight. Hanging out in Las Vegas, we have mutual friends and it’s fucking Sabu. If anyone was going to get his last match, it was going to be me. I said, ‘I’ll get you through it, Sabu.’ He goes, ‘No, I’ll get you through it.’ That’s what I want to do here. He said he wants it to be his greatest match of all time.
