Cope (Adam Copeland) has revealed the philosophy behind his promos in AEW.
The former TNT Champion recently returned from injury after suffering a broken leg at Double or Nothing 2024. Since he has returned, Cope has been on fire in his promos and in the ring and is set to challenge Jon Moxley for the AEW Championship at AEW Revolution.
The Rated R-Superstar has worked with a number of young talents and wrestlers he’s never faced before in AEW. When talking with DownUnderTheRing, Cope went through his philosophy on promos and crafting a story with other characters on TV.
He revealed that he always finds something he believes and incorporates that into his promos. The idea is that “fiction follows the truth” and his promos become more believable as a consequence.
Cope On His Promo Philosophy
“I think more than anything, it’s not even so much the character. As it is the story with other characters and how you can build those. I tried to reinvent the wheel, and it just wasn’t working,” Cope said. “Maybe it’s because now, with social media being the way it is, people can see more into our real lives. You’ve watched a guy come back from an injury that no one’s ever come back from. Maybe people don’t want to hate that. So now, if this is the lane I’m navigating. How do we create interesting stories with other talent, with what I bring to the table?”
“Even when I talk to younger talent, they ask, ‘How do you approach promos?’ I find one thing that Adam, the person, actually believes, and hopefully, the fiction follows that truth. That’s generally what I try to do—find something I can bite into, not as a performer, but as a human being, and go, ‘Right, okay, I actually believe that.’ If I can focus on that, it’s going to come out with real intent, and hopefully, everything else falls into place,” Cope added.
