Joe Hendry had the world title celebration he needed.
Hendry beat Nic Nemeth to win the TNA World Championship at Genesis on Sunday night. The new champion spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about how it felt winning the title. Hendry cautioned that he’d love to tell a wild story about his celebration, but it was a small gathering which he was very happy for.
“I would love to give you some outrageous answer about what Joe Henry did as a championship celebration. But the truth is that this spot is a lot of responsibility, and the work begins immediately. It’s interviews, it’s travel, and it’s something that I love to do. I love to work. I’m a workaholic, if you will,” Hendry explained.
“So all I did was just [go] back at the hotel, we were in the lobby, I had family there. I had some close friends there who were on the roster,” he continued. “I was able to talk with a lot of the members of the roster who have really helped me get to this point. That was all the celebration I needed. I was very happy with that.”
Joe Hendry says a top wrestler’s life is about simplicity
Pritchard noted that sometimes those are the best stories, adding that sometimes a “cheat meal” is all a performer desires after a show. That led to Hendry recalling a funny passage from Chris Jericho’s second book, Undisputed. Jericho was the new WWE Undisputed Champion, but he couldn’t even get a pizza delivered to his room after he’d won a huge match.
“I remember reading Chris Jericho’s book. After he won the Undisputed Championship, he’s beat The Rock and Stone cold in the same night. He’s got both titles, and he tells the story about how he couldn’t even get a pizza delivered to the room. And he’s like, ‘I’m the world champ twice!’ He can’t get a pizza delivered to the room,” Hendry explained. “So unfortunately, nowadays we are at the mercy of Uber Eats or whatever service you use. It’s fun to read that in Jericho’s book and kind of have similar experiences.”
Hendry said that over time, he’s realized that simplicity is key when you want to be at the top of your profession.
“To be honest, that’s something that the fans probably don’t really realize. That actually, I had more fun out partying and celebrating and whatever when I wasn’t getting the work done. That’s the thing, if you want to do this at the top level, I really learned this, that actually life has to become pretty simple,” he noted. “It’s about the task at hand. So sorry folks, love to give you a more exciting answer. Getting the title is one thing, keeping it another.”
