Cope knows he’s closer to the end of his career than at the beginning and wants to make sure he gives back on his way out.
All Elite Wrestling‘s Adam Copeland recently sat down with Stephen Brunt on Up Close. When asked what his last match is going to be, Cope spoke about getting in the ring with a young guy who will be the future of AEW and setting them up for success.
“That’s going to be the big decision for me,” Cope admitted. “Who do I get in there with last? I’d love to get in with a young person and just try and strap a rocket to him and go, okay, in my last match, what can I do to try and get someone set up, or at least another block in the foundation to set them up to be able to take it further and further and further.
“And I think to Bret [Hart], and I take his example, and I looked at what he did for me, and he didn’t need to do that. He didn’t need to put that time in. He didn’t need to care, but he did, and that really taught me, like that whole giving back, it’s true.
“I don’t want to be that old guy who’s hanging on. I want to wrestle somebody who I feel like is going to be part of the future of AEW and just have fun and experience it together. And then afterward, go, alright, man, take it and run.”
When asked how far off his final match is, Cope believes it’s likely two years away.
“I don’t know. I’m thinking maybe two years,” Cope revealed. “And being off with the broken leg is kind of extended that, right? So now this six months or whatever that I’ve been off it’s like okay I gotta tack that on now.”
