WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio appeared on the January 17th episode of WWE SmackDown.
Mysterio kicked off the show, which was held in his hometown of San Diego, California, on Friday night. Rey noted that his family was in the crowd. He then declared for the Royal Rumble match. Mysterio looked back on winning the Royal Rumble match in 2006 and becoming the world champion. He noted that the competition was heavy this year, as Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, John Cena, and Seth Rollins had already entered the match.
Mysterio then noted that he won the match for a friend that everyone knew well, and the fans chanted “Eddie” in honor of Eddie Guerrero.
Kevin Owens interrupted, and he said that he respected Rey Mysterio. He brought up his own success throughout his career and raised the Winged Eagle Title that he had been carrying around. He called himself the rightful WWE Champion. Owens said that the one thing he hadn’t done yet was to have a match with Mysterio, so he hoped that Rey would win, as he wanted to face him.
Mysterio responded by saying that Owens was not the champion, as Cody Rhodes held the gold. He said that he would be more than glad to face Owens if he won the title. Owens yelled at Mysterio by saying that he was the champion. Mysterio said that Owens was being so delusional that he reminded him of Dominik. Owen swung at Mysterio, and they brawled. Owens dodged a 619 and fled the ring, so Mysterio stood tall.
Nick Aldis then announced that Rey Mysterio would face Owens later in the show. Owens went on to beat Mysterio. When Owens started to attack Mysterio after the bout, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes made the save.
