Winner- Giulia

Grade: A

This was a great match. This match had a shocking amount of viciousness, with Perez trying to rip Giulia’s arm out of the socket and Giulia doing her best to give Perez brain damage. It was easy to walk into this thinking they were telegraphing a Giulia win, but Perez and Giulia did an amazing job selling each near fall. Even Cora Jade’s interference added to the believability of Perez somehow managing to retain once again. This was an early contender for the match of the night.

#1 Contender’s Match for NXT Women’s North American Championship: Cora Jade vs. Stephanie Vaquer vs. Lola Vice vs. Kelani Jordan

A four-way brawl breaks out. Jordan lands a dropkick that sends Jade out of the ring. After the break, Vaquer lands a flurry of strikes on the field. Jordan eats a nasty dragon screw in the ropes from Vaquer. Vice unloads on Vaquer with strikes. Vice lands a running hip attack on Vaquer but misses her attempt on Jordan. Vaquer lands a dive. Jordan follows that with a moonsault. Everyone trades pins. Jordan misses a 450 splash. Vice catches her with a spinning back fist. Vaquer superkicks Vice and hits her finish on Jordan for the win.

Winner- Stephanie Vaquer

Grade: B-

This was a standard fatal four-way. The issue with doing these types of matches so often is that it’s hard for any of them to stand out.

Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley, Jacy Jayne & Jazmyn Nyx) vs. Gigi Dolin, Shotzi & Tatum Paxley

Henley, Jayne, and Nyx attack Dolin, Shotzi, and Tatum. Dolan, Tatum, and Shotzi triple team Nyx. Nyx manages to tag out, but Henley gets rocked by Shotzi. A brawl between everyone breaks out. Shotzi tries a dive, but Henley levels her with a punch to the face. After a bit of back and forth, Dolan and Tatum land dives. Back in the ring, Shotzi crushes Henley with a senton for the win.

Winners- Gigi Dolin, Shotzi & Tatum Paxley

Grade: C+

Nothing special here. It’s odd that the champion ate the pin here… especially since a new number one contender for her championship has already been named.

Sudden Death Rules Match for NXT Heritage Cup: Lexis King vs. Charlie Dempsey (c)

King and Dempsey trade shots. King dropkicks Dempsey off the apron. Dive by King. After the break, King gets a near fall after a Northern Lights suplex. King lands a crossbody, but Dempsey rolls through and locks in an armbar. King breaks it up. Dempsey reverses King’s finish into a chicken wing. King gets to the ropes. Dempsey blasts King with a nasty right hand. Both men are down after the slam heads. Dempsey tries to leapfrog, but King can’t duck fast enough, so he accidentally headbutts Dempsey below the belt. King hits the Coronation for the win.

Winner- Lexis King

Grade: C+

So this match was fine, but it’s illogical to have a Heritage Cup match that is one fall to a finish. What are we doing here?

NXT Championship Match: Trick Williams (c) vs. Oba Femi vs. Eddy Thorpe

Thorpe is nowhere to be found. Femi and Williams lock up. Williams manages to hit a fireman’s carry driver. After the break, Femi is working over Williams. Williams flips out of a suplex. Femi eats the ring post while attempting a corner spear. Williams goes up top. Femi cuts Williams off. Williams surprises Femi with a Book End. Femi kicks out. Williams fires up and lands a flurry of offense. Williams tries a running knee. Femi counters with a big chop. Williams counters the Fall from Grace with a cyclone boot. Femi kicks out again.

Williams tries the Trick Shot, Femi counters with the roaring uppercut. Fall From Grace by Femi. Femi goes for the pin, but someone pulls the referee out of the ring. It’s Eddy Thorpe! Thorpe brings a chair into the ring. Femi destroys Thorpe with a spinebuster. Williams catches Femi with a Trick Shot out of nowhere. Femi kicks out. Williams sets up another Trick Shot. Thorpe stands up with the chair. William charges in, but Femi ducks. Williams crashes into the chair Thorpe is holding. Femi hits the Fall from Grace on Williams for the win!

Winner- Oba Femi

Grade: B

Adding Thorpe to this match was odd to begin with, so the way they used him here made perfect sense. Femi gets the win, but Williams has an out, with Thorpe’s chair playing a role in the finish. Femi and Williams are both amazing talents, which showed tonight in this hard-hitting match.

The Final Boss is Here

The Rock talks about how the crowd is giving him chills. Rock says something and gets bleeped. The crowd cheers as Rock puts over the NXT locker room and the NXT Universe.

Grade: D

Yes, this writer knows segments like this have a purpose. They aren’t for fans like most of us or probably most of you. With that, this was a gigantic waste of time.

WWE NXT Review:

NXT New Year’s Evil had flashes of brilliance, particularly in its top matches, but the lack of consistency and occasional missteps in booking and segment design held it back from reaching its full potential. The strong performances by Giulia, Perez, and Femi highlight the immense talent on the roster, but uneven pacing and questionable decisions like altering the Heritage Cup format prevented the show from being a home run.
