Kris Statlander Is Open to a Women’s Continental Classic Tournament

It has become an AEW tradition to host a tournament to determine the next Continental Classic Champion. Last year, the inaugural champion was crowned and it was the Mad King Eddie Kingston. This year, the Grand Finale was between Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada. The Rainmaker won the match to retain his Continental Classic Title. Recently, former AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander pondered over the thought of there being a Women’s Continental Classic tournament.

While speaking to Comicbook.com, Kris Statlander shared her thoughts on AEW potentially conducting a Continental Classic Tournament for the women’s division.

“Why would I not want more opportunities as a woman on the women’s roster? I would love anything, anything really. The Continental Classic is something, we have something we haven’t had before. We haven’t had a Battle Royal in quite a long time. More tournaments, more Gauntlets, anything. Anytime the women get a chance to really step up and show out, we always exceed expectations, and I just want to be a part of everything that you could possibly be a part of,” Statlander said.

While speaking in the same interview, Statlander also reflected on her match against the current TBS Champion Mercedes Moné at AEW Full Gear.

“I mean, I think we kind of really played to each other’s strengths in a way, and it’s hard to always find someone that you can wrestle that will do that and will compliment that for you. And I think that’s kind of what made the match so special, is that we really showcased who we are against each other,” Statlander said. “There’s a lot of really great things about that match and I’m so honored to have been the one to put on that performance. But yeah, I think it’s as simple as that.”

Statlander shared that it was an honor to wrestle Moné and that both trusted each other and that resulted in how the match turned out to be.

“I mean, it’s such an honor and it’s something that I don’t, I don’t take lightly because I never would give myself the credit of being that person. It’s always two people in a match. It’s never just on me to perform and pull like a great match out of somebody. Not that it’s like it was me that pulled a great match out of her, but it’s just, we were just two people that found each other in the right spot in wrestling,” Statlander said. “I trusted her, she trusted me, and we were just able to put on something incredible. And it’s, she says it’s one of her best matches of her career. Obviously, it’s one of my best matches in my career and it’s one of my favorites. It’s one of those things I’ll never forget.”
