Mariah May On Winning AEW Women’s World Title: It Still Feels Crazy, But Also Feels Right

Mariah May looks back on her big title win.

At AEW All In, “The Glamour” Mariah May defeated “Timeless” Toni Storm to claim her first AEW Women’s World Championship. According to May, this moment was quite fitting, not only as it came in her hometown of London, but also as she has all the tools of a champion.

“It was amazing,” May told Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald. “Like I said, it’s a hell of a rookie year and I always planned to go after Toni Storm. I didn’t know it would go that far. I didn’t know that any of these things would happen. As I said it, kind of fell into place perfectly. Toni won the world title. Tony [Khan] put me into the Owen [Hart Foundation Tournament]. London’s my hometown. Wembley, All In is our biggest show and the way it fell into place was so perfect. When I first came in that was not really my intention. I was just going to have fun kind of picking apart Toni Storm, but for it to fall like that and to be the world champion in my first year is definitely a huge honor.

“It only makes sense because I always said I’m going to come into this division and I’m going to take over because I feel that I have the tools to do so,” May continued. “I feel like I have the look, the personality, and the skills just based on my travels, based on my experience and based on my work ethic. It was definitely a surreal moment. It still feels crazy, but also it feels right.”

Since winning the AEW Women’s Championship, May has successfully defended it six times, with the latest coming against Mina Shirakawa. Looking ahead, May will now put her title on the line against Thunder Rosa, a former world champion, at AEW Worlds End. Meanwhile, Toni Storm has returned to AEW television with an apparent case of amnesia. As such, Storm has brought back her original punk-rock gimmick and is now acclimating to the “new” environment.
