James Gunn Shares How Pro Wrestling Influenced Superman Costume In New Film

James Gunn explains why Superman dresses like a professional wrestler in his new movie.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director is the head of the DCEU and is writing and directing the upcoming Superman movie. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman in the reboot of the series.

The actor took over the role from Henry Cavill, who last played the Kryptonian superhero. This new movie brings back a classic look for the Man of Steel, as the classic Superman trunks were revealed to be part of the costume for the film.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, James Gunn explained how he decided on Superman’s costume for the film. He revealed that they tried costumes with the famous trunks and without them to find the best look.

David Corenswet, who plays Superman/Clark Kent, pointed out to Gunn that they didn’t want kids to be afraid of the alien Superman and wanted him to be a “symbol of hope and positivity”.

So, they went for the trunks, dressing like a professional wrestler so people aren’t afraid of him.

“David [Corenswet] said something to me that really affected me. We were trying on all these different versions, and we screened tested with trunks and no trunks. And one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers.” James Gunn said.

“He shoots beams out of his eyes, [he] can blow the truck over. He’s this incredibly powerful – could be considered scary – individual, and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that. That really clicked in for me.”

A 30-second teaser dropped on Wednesday morning. The first full Superman movie trailer will premiere on Thursday.
