Report: Matt Cardona Offered AEW Contract, Status Uncertain

Matt Cardona has been featured on AEW programming recently, and he has been offered a contract, according to a new report.

Cardona made a surprise appearance on the December 5 episode of ROH on HonorClub, and he was revealed as ROH World Champion Chris Jericho’s challenger for ROH Final Battle. Cardona appeared on the following episodes of AEW Rampage and AEW Dynamite. He then competed at AEW Rampage: Winter is Coming.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer was asked about Matt Cardona and his status, as it was noted that AEWShop.com was selling a Cardona t-shirt. Meltzer stated that Cardona was offered a contract. However, he did not know whether he had signed. (H/t Ian Carey of F4WOnline.com)

Cardona previously had a brief run in AEW in 2020. He made a one-off return on the March 30, 2024, episode of AEW Collision. There, he faced Adam Copeland.

WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.

Matt Cardona On Not Getting An Offer

In October, Cardona sparked buzz by saying that he was shocked that he had not gotten an offer from WWE or AEW since his WWE release in 2020, given his successful run around the wrestling world. Cardona then elaborated on his comments while speaking with Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture.

“I can only control what I can control. I’m not gonna lie to the people, I’m not gonna pretend there’s been all these offers,” Matt Cardona said. “As a matter of fact, I haven’t been offered anything from WWE or AEW, and it is what it is. Maybe that will change one day, but for now, I just need to focus on being me. I need to focus on reinventing myself again, I need to focus on being the top guy on the indies for another year, I gotta focus on maybe changing the indies, elevating other people.

“I can’t harp on what’s not going on, I have to focus and put all my focus on just me and create my own path and create my own legacy, and I feel like the past four years. But it’s almost another year. It’s almost 2025, so the pressure’s on to top myself, and it’s a good pressure, I love the pressure.”
