Trevor Lee: NXT’s Million Dollar Title Revival Wasn’t Originally Planned, It Was More Like A ‘Happenstance’

Trevor Lee has pulled back the curtain about his Million Dollar Championship feud with LA Knight in NXT.

In 2021, Trevor Lee (As Cameron Grimes) and LA Knight were involved in a series of matches. With Ted DiBiase aligning with each man over the months, they battled for the Million Dollar Championship in a series of matches. Eventually, the title was retired and Trevor Lee was recognized as the final man to hold the coveted title belt.

Trevor Lee recently spoke with WrestleZone’s Bill Pritchard and was asked about his run with the Million Dollar Championship in NXT. The former WWE star explained how there were no big plans for him to become the champion. He just shot some vignettes with Ted DiBiase, and they went so well that the decision was made to revive the title for the first time in over a decade.

Trevor Lee On Becoming The Million Dollar Champion

“It was definitely like a happenstance. When they said, ‘We are going to have Ted come in,’ there was no talks of it being… for it to ultimately bring in the Million Dollar Championship. But we were very fortunate that with WWE’s resources, we got to do a lot of very cool vignettes. We had one day for taping and we did three different vignettes in that day. And it was the watch shopping with Ted and buying a house with Ted,” Trevor Lee said.

“And then there was one more we did that day as well. But I can’t exactly remember which one it was. But it was just supposed to be those eventually. And then, once I got back to the production and they edited it all up and everything they were like, ‘Man! This is some good stuff. Maybe we will get a little bit more out of this.’ And then once they started thinking about getting more out of it, then it was like, ‘Let’s just bring back the Million Dollar Title,’ since it was becoming so big. It was just kind of like a week-by-week thing.”

Trevor Lee and LA Knight put their best foot forward

Trevor Lee pointed out that there was a bit of a generation gap between himself and LA Knight. Lee grew up as a fan of the Hardys, so DiBiase’s original run didn’t resonate with him as much as it did LA Knight. Despite that, both of them wanted to ensure their feud was the best it could be.

“And LA Knight is a little bit older than I am. So he got to grow up on the original Million Dollar storyline. And that wasn’t my era of growing up. I grew up on the Hardy Boys. So it wasn’t as attached to me. So for him, he really did want to make it as good as possibly it can be. I was just wanting to make it as good as it possibly can be, but not because of… Exactly, it wasn’t a nostalgia thing, just because I knew it was very cool. And I wanted to do the best work we can do together,” Trevor Lee said.

Trevor Lee on what pop culture-inspired gimmick would be good now?

Trevor Lee was then asked what pop culture-inspired gimmick, like his “Gamestop Million” gimmick in 2021, would be relevant in 2024. The former Cameron Grimes named Orange Cassidy as a good example of the “chill guy” meme, although he doesn’t know what he’d be if he was trying to capture that magic again.

“I don’t know. Because I don’t really know what’s happening right now in pop culture that would really stick out like that. Yeah, that’s a good question because those things really do come every… They are very sporadic, it’s hard to just pick a topic.” Trevor Lee said.

“Cuz right now I would think, what is like some of the biggest pop culture stuff is maybe like the ‘Chill Guy.’ I think Orange Cassidy already did that. So, I’m not really sure. But I am sure there definitely will be something soon that someone can always attach to.”

“If you go back and look, for instance, Robbie E when Jersey Shore was big. That’s when the Bromans became a thing and they were very successful with that. So there’s always those things that you can always attach too. But as of right now, nothing is like sticking out in my mind like, ‘Man, I need to do that.’”
