AEW Continental Classic Action
AEW Continental Classic – Blue League: Mark Briscoe vs. Kazuchika Okada
The Blue League of AEW’s Continental Classic kicked off tonight’s event, and Okada wasted fairly little time in getting out to a hot start. The two superstars wasted little time in going big hit for big hit, with Okada hitting a big DDT after the pair took things out of the ring and then got back in.
Late in the match, Briscoe was hit with a dropkick from Okada, but countered a Rainmaker with a Jay Driller attempt that Okada escaped from. Briscoe kept trying to hit the Jay Drille,r but Okada would keep away and then eventually hit the Rainmaker to score the win and up his points total to 4.
Winner – Kazuchika Okada
Grade – B+
Absolutely awesome match to kick off the show here, and not your typical AEW affair either. These two were all power, and really showcased what some of the non-super athletic superstars can do in the ring.
Chris Jericho took to the ring after the match to begin talking trash to Matt Cardona. Cardona came out and said he would make sure to win the ROH World Championship in his backyard, and after some more back and forth with Jericho calling Matt “Zach,” the two began slapping before Bryan Keith helped Jericho by hitting Cardona with his belt buckle.
The Blue League Continues The Night
AEW Continental Classic – Blue League: Daniel Garcia vs. The Beast Mortos
We’re up for another AEW Continental Classic Match here, as Garcia and The Beast Mortos meet in the ring. Mortos started out hot, countering a suplex and hitting one of his own to send Garcia outside of the ring. Back inside, Mortos would keep up the aggression, hitting a Samoan Drop on him to take over.
Later in the match, the pair had fought to a back-and-forth affair when Garcia dodged a big moonsault off the top rope from Mortos. He then rolled up Mortos but couldn’t finish it, and then got hit with a headbutt. Unfortunately, Mortos couldn’t end it there, and got rolled up by Garcia for the loss. With the win, Garcia also ups his point total to 4 in the Blue League.
Winner – Daniel Garcia
Grade: B
Another solid match overall. The crowd was really getting into Mortos, which was nice, but Garcia winning does make for an interesting clash down the line.
The Vendetta Get A Quick Win
The Vendetta vs. Ella Elizabeth & Freya States
This one was over pretty much immediately, as Purrazzo and Valkyrie absolutely went to town on their opponents. It ended after Purrazzo hit a big powerbomb on Elizabeth, after which the referee went to check on the superstar before Purrazzo locked in an armbar for the win.
Winner – The Vendetta
Grade – C
This one was…well, a bunch of nothing. Was fun to see Purrazzo dominate, but this was nothing more than a filler match, sadly.
Gold League Match Closes The Night
AEW Continental Classic – Gold League: Ricochet vs. Komander
The final match of the night saw Ricochet and Komander battling it out for three crucial points in the Continental Classic’s Gold League. The match was a high-flying affair, with both superstars going at it from the very start. Ricochet and Komander traded moonsaults and DDTs, and eventually Ricochet hit a big standing shooting star press for a near fall.
Later in the match, Komander would flip a superplex attempt into a springboard hurricanrana for a near fall. Ricochet and Komander then began trading blows, and Komander hit Ricochet with a big kick before connecting on a 450 splash for another near fall. The end of the match saw Ricochet hit Komander with the “Spirit Gun” after connecting on a brainbuster, springboard 450, axe kick, and running death valley driver in succession to win the match and claim those 3 points. That’s the show.
Grade – B+
This was another fun one here, and it’s always awesome to see the two high-flyers going at it in the ring.
AEW Rampage Review
Grade – B+
For the first time in a few weeks, this felt like a big show packed with some awesome matches. Good to see after, frankly, what were a few duds of episodes. Looking forward to seeing if they can keep it going next week.
