Tony Schiavone looks back on his time in WCW and names the moment he realized that the company was beyond saving.
Schiavone was with WCW throughout its rise and fall in the 1990s. He was part of the company when the New World Order took the company to new heights. Schiavone remained with the company through its downfall, which led to WWE buying them. Various matches and moments, in addition to other factors, have been blamed for WCW’s failure over the years.
On the latest episode of his What Happened When podcast, Tony Schiavone was asked whether there was a particular moment when he realized that WCW could not be fixed. He pointed to the infamous match between Sting and Hollywood Hulk Hogan at WCW Starrcade 1997. (H/t Fightful for the transcription)
“Yeah, I think it’s the Sting/Hogan match,” he said. “I think I thought that if Hogan was able to change around the finish from what we knew was right, then we had no chance. By the time David Arquette won the world title, we were beyond being fixed. I think it’s Sting not winning the world title cleanly over Hogan. If you go back and watch it, it is a f*cked up thing man.”
Tony Schiavone now works for AEW, both as a broadcaster and as a key member of the backstage team.
