A WWE motion to stay the “ring boys” lawsuit has been granted, leaving the lawsuit pending until a ruling by the Maryland Supreme Court on the Child Victims Act.
Per court records, the motion, which was granted by Judge James K. Bredar, will see the Maryland Supreme Court rule on the Child Victims Act first. The motion came as WWE argued that the lawsuit would not be moving forward if the claims against the Child Victims Act were found to be unconstitutional. A ruling on that is expected sometime before August 31, 2025.
“If the [Child Victims Act] is found to be unconstitutional, the claims here cannot go forward. Given that circumstance, it is appropriate and even necessary to stay this matter until the Supreme Court of Maryland decides that fundamental and potentially case determinative issue,” WWE representatives said in their motion.
The Lawsuit Alleges Sexual Abuse
The lawsuit in question was originally filed in late October, and is against WWE, Vince McMahon, Linda McMahon, and TKO. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of “Ring Boys” who were alleged to have been sexually abused during their time with WWE.
Five survivors — all listed as John Doe for the sake of anonymity — allege that they were groomed and subsequently sexually abused by WWE ring crew boss and ring announcer Mel Phillips during his time with the company.
The lawsuit also cites various other WWE personnel who were alleged to have known of the abuse.
WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
