Zack Sabre Jr. says he’s just getting started.
Sabre Jr. has become one of NJPW‘s top stars in recent years, and his ascension has reached new heights in 2024. After winning the NJPW G1 Climax 34, he beat Tetsuya Naito to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling posted an interview with Sabre Jr. on their YouTube channel, and he discussed his title win.
“I said before, winning the G1 felt like the start of my career,” Zack Sabre Jr. said. “Well, I feel like this [title] is just step two. To be the champion is one thing, to stay the champion…so I’m not relishing in, ‘Oh, I’ve done everything I’ve ever wanted.’ This is the start of the hard work. No matter how long this title reign lasts, obviously I’m aiming to reach the record number of defenses in a title reign for this new championship, that’s the goal.
“But whatever happens after this, we are still into the early days of my career. I’m 20 years in, I’ve got 20 more top-level years. So yeah, my goal now is to really start the hard work, being champion of one of the largest wrestling companies in the world. It’s not gonna be easy, I’m fully aware of that. But I’ve bet on myself this entire time, and now the gamble starts.”
