Adam Cole Comments On Injury Stopping Him From Winning The AEW Title

Adam Cole has spoken about a potential AEW Championship reign being thwarted by injury.

The AEW star looked set to be next in line to the world title in AEW last year. After a summer-long rivalry with MJF over the belt, the pair wrestled in the main event of Wembley Stadium in 2023 in a match that saw MJF retain the championship.

However, Adam Cole also portrayed “the Devil” character, a masked man who regularly attacked MJF. He was seemingly supposed to be unveiled as the Devil after beating MJF for the AEW Championship. Sadly, a shattered ankle months prior halted any chance of him becoming AEW World Champion.

Adam Cole recently talked with the Stick To Wrestling Podcast, and was asked if he was supposed to win the AEW title before his injury. The former NXT Champion said that he wasn’t certain, but it looked like he would win the title instead of the eventual winner, Samoa Joe.

However, Adam Cole noted that as wrestlers, they always have to adapt to things out of their control.

“So as you know in the world of professional wrestling, there are constantly different ideas being thrown around, or changes constantly. Do I know for sure that I was gonna be in line to become the AEW World Champion? I’m not totally sure. But that’s certainly where it seemed we were going.”

“It’s certainly the direction I think very possibly could have happened, had I not been injured. It really did add to the mental anguish of the entire process. But again, there are constant roadblocks thrown in our way all the time. We’ve got to adapt. I’ve still got a lot of my wrestling career left. I certainly hope the AEW Title is in my future in the future.”
