Momo Watanabe Challenges Mayu Iwatani For Historic X-Over II

Momo Watanabe has her eyes set on Mayu Iwatani and the IWGP Women’s Championship after an intense confrontation.

STARDOM kicked off their 14th annual Goddess of Stardom Tag League this past October 26 in Tokyo. At the show, Mayu Iwatani and Momo Kohgo successfully defeated AZM and Miyu Amasaki under the Red Goddesses block, earning themselves two points.

As Mayu looked to celebrate her victory, Momo Watanabe entered the ring to confront the IWGP Women’s Champion. She initially called out Mayu for defeating her in the recent 5 Star Grand Prix by using her bat against her. However, what started off as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a vicious attack as she attacked Mayu with that same bat. She then made her intentions clear by issuing a challenge for the IWGP Women’s Championship at the upcoming NJPW x STARDOM Historic X-Over II show in November.

As of the time of writing, Mayu Iwatani holds a record-setting seven successful defenses of the championship. Momo Watanabe, on the other hand, has never competed for the IWGP Women’s Championship in a singles match in her career. Both women share quite a history, however, with Mayu defeating Momo in the first round of the inaugural IWGP Women’s Championship tournament in 2022. Mayu went on to compete in the finals before coming up short to eventual inaugural champion KAIRI (known as Kairi Sane in WWE).
