AEW Dynamite results
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite kicks off with a recap package of last week’s show.
We are taken to a scene in the parking lot where about a dozen wrestlers are awaiting the arrival of the Blackpool Combat Club. It looks like there’s going to be a big brawl at some point tonight.
Tony Schiavone is in the ring and brings out Hangman Page. Schiavone brings up the fact that Page lost to Jay White at WrestleDream and then he cost White his match with Cage last week. Page says last week he took White’s head off and before that, he nearly took Juice Robinson’s life.
Hangman talks about how he took out Austin Gunn but is attacked from behind by Colten Gunn. The two men brawl outside of the ring and Page gets the advantage. Page takes Colten back in the ring and tries to choke him with his belt. This brings out Jay White and Juice Robinson. White gets to Page and Hangman runs away.
Jay White says Hangman can hobble away but he can’t hide. White points out that Hangman is walking with a limp and that he always has Page’s number. White says Page can try to cover up his shortcomings but it won’t change the fact that he’ll never be able to measure up to the Switchblade.
A vignette airs hyping tonight’s match between Sammy Guevara and Shelton Benjamin. That match is next!
Sammy Guevara vs. Shelton Benjamin (w/ MVP)
- The closing moments of the match saw Shelton Benjamin hit Sammy Guevara with a T-Bone Exploder suplex to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
Grade: A
A tremendous opening contest between Benjamin and Guevara. The idea to let Benjamin come in and get the solo spotlight before the eventual addition of Bobby Lashley was a genius move by AEW. Guevara looked great in his first match back in almost a month. I really enjoyed that!
Mariah May sends a message to Anna Jay
Renee Paquette tries to interview Mariah May backstage. May tosses Anna Jay’s bag out of the locker room and says she doesn’t belong with her in the locker room or the ring. Jay shows up and the two women get into it before Christopher Daniels breaks it up.
Tony Schiavone is back in the ring and brings out Kyle Fletcher and Don Callis. Kyle Fletcher says the people can boo him all they want, the only person he’s here to talk to is Will Ospreay. Fletcher says it’s been 11 days since he cost Ospreay his International Championship and he’s been laid up in a hospital bed.
Fletcher says the people are just as much to blame as Ospreay for what he did to him. Kyle says when he got to AEW everyone said he had the brightest future in pro wrestling and then Will Opsreay showed up and he was instead called the next Ospreay.
Fletcher says he took that as an insult because he believes he’s better than Ospreay in every single way. The crowd chants “Wrap it up” clearly not caring about what Fletcher has to say. Kyle gets pissy and says the people will listen to what he has to say.
Fletcher says Ospreay turning on Okada and Omega gave him the blueprint of how he knew to get out of his shadow. Kyle Fletcher calls Ospreay selfish as the crowd chants “Shut the f*ck up.” Fletcher says Ospreay will face him next week to prove that he gives a damn about the fans.
Fletcher says he can’t be anything like Will Ospreay and proceeds to shave his head.
Grade: B
The segment was fine for what it was. While Fletcher’s reasoning could have used a lot more depth at least we were given an explanation for his actions which is a lot more than we can say about Jon Moxley right now. It will be interesting to see if Ospreay accepts Fletcher’s challenge to face him next week on Dynamite which is quickly turning into a very stacked show.
Ricochet talks about his appearance at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling as MVP continues to recruit
Renee Paquette is backstage with Ricochet. Ricochet says he made good on his promise that he’ll show up anywhere. Ricochet lays out an open challenge to take on anyone this Friday on Rampage. MVP and Shelton Benjamin approach. MVP asks to start things over with a clean slate as they are in a new company and hands him his business card. Porter compliments Ricochet on his suit.
Lance Archer and Brian Cage vs. Two unnamed local talents
- The closing moments of the match see Cage and Archer hit a double-team move. Archer scores the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: Brian Cage and Lance Archer
Grade: N/A
The match was just a quick squash match, way too quick to grade. If you like a good squash match, you’ll enjoy this one.
Chuck Taylor gives Orange Cassidy a pep talk on AEW Dynamite
We go back to the parking lot with the talent waiting on Blackpool Combat Club. Kyle O’Reilly comes to get Orange Cassidy because Ladder War is up next. Cassidy is stopped by Chuck Taylor who tells him he needs to stand up and fight for AEW against BCC because these are people that he’s been able to defeat before.
Ladder War for the Ring of Honor World Championship: Mark Briscoe (c) vs. Chris Jericho
- The finish of the match saw Big Bill assist Chris Jericho to capture the Ring of Honor World Title
Winner: New Ring of Honor World Champion Chris Jericho
Tomohiro Ishii and Rocky Romero come out on the stage following the match to stare down Jericho and Big Bill.
Grade: F
So what was the point of Kyle O’Reilly getting Orange Cassidy for Briscoe’s match when neither of them showed up to assist their friend? That was really freaking stupid. And let’s get real for a minute, Chris Jericho’s first reign as Ring of Honor World Champion sucked and that’s when the brand was in a much better standing than it is now. Another reign from Jericho isn’t what Ring of Honor needs as a brand right now. I can’t wait to see Jericho not appear on any Thursday night episode of ROH on HonorClub because heaven forbid the champions show up there and make the brand feel important beyond Athena. I said what I said!
Roderick Strong wants to talk to ADAM!!!!
Adam Cole comes to the ring to speak but before he can get going he’s interrupted by the Undisputed Kingdom. Roderick Strong puts down MJF and they talk about how their friendship is way bigger than him.
Strong says he’s proud of Cole to work his ass off this past year to come back from a serious ankle injury and he’s proud of him coming back to finish what they started to take out MJF together. Strong says he wants the first shot at MJF. Cole says Strong is right and they are going to finish what they started one way or another and thinks they should finish it tonight.
Cole calls out MJF and Friedman once again shows up on the Tron, not at the venue. MJF says Cole won’t ever get his hands on him. Friedman says Cole and Strong can compete and whoever gets to three wins first can face him at Full Gear because he’s not showing up before then. Kyle O’Reilly is shown backstage watching all of this go down.
Grade: B-
I feel they did a decent job here trying to connect everything that previously happened between Cole and the Undisputed Kingdom. But MJF saying Cole will never get his hands on him and then giving him a path to do so was silly. It will be interesting to see if Cole and Strong’s egos will co-exist as they compete for wins heading into Full Gear next month.
A video package airs recapping the rivalry between Jamie Hayter and Penelope Ford.
Renee Paquette is backstage with Jamie Hayter. Jamie Hayter says she listened to everything that came out of Ford’s mouth and believes it’s all BS. Hayter says she worked for this. Hayter says she’s there looking for a fight and Ford is nowhere to be found. Jamie challenges Ford to a match on AEW Dynamite two weeks from tonight.
House of Black in action
- The closing moments of the match saw Buddy Matthews curb-stomp his opponent’s head into the mat and scored the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: House of Black
After the match, Buddy Matthews challenges Adam Cole to a match next week on Dynamite.
Grade: N/A
Adam Cole confronts Buddy Matthews backstage after the match and asks if he has a problem with him. Matthews says it’s to prove a point. Cole asks what that is and Matthews says that’s he fragile.
Kamille (w/ Mercedes Moné) vs. Queen Aminata
- The closing moments of the match saw Kamille hit Queen Aminata with a flipping reverse DDT to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Kamille
Kris Statlander comes to the ring following the match and stands face-to-face with Kamille. Mercedes tries to attack Statlander from behind but Statlander takes down both women. Eventually, the numbers game gets the better of her, and Mercedes and Kamille leave Statlander lying on the canvas.
Grade: B
This was Kamille’s most competitive match in AEW to date. The two women beat the hell out of each other and delivered a damn good match. Kamille and Kris Statlander should be pretty special next week.
Christian Cage arrives at Dynamite and is confronted by HOOK
Out in the parking lot, a car arrives but it’s not Blackpool Combat Club, it’s The Patriarchy. They see Kip Sabian outside and chase him to the ring. HOOK is shown backstage on the Tron and says the person who attacked Taz is in the ring and he’s going to whoop his ass.
HOOK hits the ring and takes out Nick Wayne, he tries to go after Christian Cage who is seemingly the one who attacked Taz but is stopped by Kip Sabian. Cage says he’ll deal with Sabian later. Cage ends up getting the better of HOOK and hits him with a Killswitch on his metal contract. Christian tells HOOK things aren’t what they seem and leaves.
Private Party and Daniel Garcia vs. The Elite (Jack Perry and the Young Bucks)
- The closing moments of the match saw Isiah Kassidy get a small package on Matthew Jackson to score the pinfall victory for their team.
Winners: Daniel Garcia and Private Party
Private Party say they want a rematch for the AEW Tag Titles. The Young Bucks leave and Kassidy says he has an offer they can’t turn down. Kassidy says if they give them another title shot and they lose, Private Party splits up. Nicholas Jackson says they are on. It seems the match is made official for next week.
Grade: B+
Outside Marina Shafir arrives by shelf so BCC can attack Private Party and Daniel Garcia from behind. Jon Moxley drags Chuck Taylor to the ring and they try to Pillmanize his head. Orange Cassidy hits the ring but Claudio already hit the move. Cassidy looks at Taylor in disbelief as AEW Dynamite goes off the air.
AEW Dynamite review
The show was a very noticeable step up from last week. If not for the Jericho garbage this show would have easily gotten a higher grade. A lot of great wrestling with a lot of good storyline advancement. Also scaling back Blackpool Combat Club’s involvement on this week’s show was very welcome. Can’t ask for much more than that.
Grade: B
