Kurt Angle On Infamous Shane McMahon Match: We Were So Dumb, But Happy We Tore The House Down

Kurt Angle has pulled back the curtain on his iconic match with Shane McMahon.

The pair met in one of the most brutal matches ever at King of the Ring 2001. They battled in a street fight, which saw them brawl around the arena, most notably up the ramp and onto the stage. This is where the worst and most memorable spot occurred. Kurt Angle attempted to belly-to-belly suplex Shane McMahon through a plate glass window.

However, he threw the young McMahon, who bounced off the glass and fell head-first onto the concrete floor. Angle tried again and again until the glass finally smashed. Shane McMahon sustained a gash on his arm, in what was one of the most gruesome spots in WWE history.

The pair still went on to finish the match, which became one of the most memorable in Kurt Angle’s career.

Kurt Angle spoke with Sam Roberts on NotSamWrestling about the match with Shane McMahon. He explained how they were high-fiving each other in the hospital about how great the match went, while explaining the issue with the glass.

“That was a nightmare. We both ended up in the hospital that night—we were so stupid. We’re in the hospital high-fiving each other, we’re both crippled. And you know, I’m looking back today and thinking, we were so dumb, but we were so happy because we tore the house down.”

“I always hear, ‘You know, my favorite match of yours was you versus Shane. His head kept hitting the concrete, I could hear it.’ And I was like, ‘Shane, we got to move on.’ He’s like, ‘No, throw me through that glass.'”

“And I’m like, ‘Shane, it’s not working.’ What happened was, it was supposed to be sugar glass. But it was plexiglass. So, we were going through real glass.”
