Oba Femi Becomes Longest-Reigning NXT North American Champion Ever

NXT North American Champion Oba Femi has made history.

In a tweet, WWE highlighted how Oba Femi had broken the record for the longest NXT North American Championship reign. By reaching 270 days, he broke the previous mark, which had been set by Wes Lee (269 days).

Femi won the title by defeating Dragon Lee on the January 9 episode of WWE NXT. He has defended the championship against Lee, Lexis King, Brooks Jensen, Josh Briggs, Dijak, Wes Lee, Ivar, Joe Coffey, Otis, and Tony D’Angelo. Femi will defend the title against D’Angelo on the October 8 episode of NXT.

Oba Femi shows what he’s all about

WrestleZone spoke with Oba Femi about his run as North American Champion. Oba won the title by cashing in his NXT Breakout Tournament contract, but he said his rematch with Dragon Lee at Vengeance Day made a statement and showed what he was all about.

“As much as I would love to say the Stand & Deliver Triple Threat, with Josh Briggs and Dijak, because that was the best match. I’ll have to say the one with Dragon Lee at Vengeance Day. Because that was the debut,” he stated. “‘Okay, he won the breakout tournament. He cashed in. He has the title. So… But now what? What does he have now?’

“I feel like that match was the first introduction to what Oba Femi is all about. Oba Femi is a young, hungry athlete, warrior, who is looking to make a name for himself,” he continued. “Uncover his own legacy, fulfill destiny. And with that comes a certain level of chip being on his shoulder. Something to prove. And I feel like, that match exhibited all of those… It showed who Oba Femi is. He might be young, he might be inexperienced. But, he knows what he is doing.”
