Sgt. Slaughter turned down the chance to appear in Kevin Smith’s latest movie.
The WWE Hall of Famer was famous for his role in WWE in the 1980s. His heel turn as an Iraqi sympathizer run in the early 1990s was less well-regarded.
However, the WWE legend was best known for being a part of the GI Joe toy line, TV series and comic book. His inclusion was one of the biggest moves a wrestler had made to traditional media. It worked wonders for his profile.
However, a now-retired Sgt. Slaughter has turned down the opportunity to appear in a movie.
Kevin Smith spoke with Tyler Treese for ComingSoon about his upcoming film, The 4:30. The Clerks director revealed that he wrote the Major Murder role, which is played by Sam Richardson, with Sgt Slaughter in mind.
Sgt. Slaughter said he was not an actor
Smith revealed that he lived near the former WWE Champion as a child. He met Sgt. Slaughter at a convention and asked him to play the role in the movie. However, Sarge turned him down. The legend told him that he couldn’t act, and couldn’t “say important things” if cast.
“When I was making this, like originally, I’d written it for Sgt. Slaughter to do,” Smith explained. “I hit him up at a con. I was like, ‘Hey, man.’ Because he lived where we grew up. So as we were kids, we bike ride to his condo and be like, ‘That’s where Sgt. Slaughter lives.’ So I hit him up about it at a con and he was like, ‘I can’t act. I’m a wrestler. If you need this character to say important things, I don’t think I could do that.’ So then I refashioned it, and I thought of Sam and reached out, and he mercifully had the time and was able to do it.”
