Malakai Black & Buddy Matthews in Tag Team Action
Malakai Black & Buddy Matthews vs. Lio Rush & Action Andretti
Black and Matthews opened up the night against Lio Rush and Action Andretti in a tag team match. Rush was able to use his speed early to keep staying away from Black, but was blindly tagged out by Matthews, much to his chagrin. Andretti got into the ring ready to go, and was clearly way too amped up for the start of things.
Later in the match, with Rush once again in, Andretti blind tagged himself in again, this time with Rush ready to hit a big splash off the top rope. The pair got into it for a moment, allowing Black to sneak in and hit a roundhouse kick to Andretti for the pinfall.
Winner – Malakai Black & Buddy Matthews
After the match, Andretti argued with Top Flight, and threw a drink at Brody King. King had seen enough and promptly dropped Andretti into the corner, but Top Flight saved him before House of Black could do much of anything else. Andretti was absolutely enraged, though, and had to be held back by Top Flight and Rush.
Grade: B
All things considered, the match was solid and entertaining. It’ll be interesting to see where things go from here with Andretti. As for House of Black, they seem stuck in the mud in a way, so hopefully this win is able to get them going onto something big.
Anna Jay Goes Up Against Robyn Renegade
Anna Jay vs. Robyn Renegade
Jay made pretty short work of Renegade in this one. She started with some big knees to Robyn’s gut before dropping her into the corner. Renegade was able to bounce back and get some punches in, but Jay quickly regained momentum and hit a big running forearm to take Renegade to the ground again. Jay then promptly hit a Gory Bomb once they got back up to the mat to win the bout.
Grade: C
All in all, a pretty uneventful match. Jay was dominant and got in some awesome shots at Renegade, but not too much happened to move the needle for either superstar in a direction.
Takeshita and Angelico Get Technical
Konosuke Takeshita vs. Angelico
Takeshita and Angelico put on a show for the fans tonight. With Don Callis missing from ringside due to being on the road, Takeshita looked less than stellar at the start of things. After being thrown into the corner, Takeshita was nearly rolled up on but kicked out, and the pair then got down to the ground to trade moves. Takeshita managed to break out of a submission hold, then Angelico dropped Takeshita back into the ropes.
After setting up Takeshita for a big splash, Angelico was unable to capitalize as he was caught by Konosuke in mid-air. Takeshita finally got a chance to do something and landed the Blue Thunder Bomb. With Angelico now dazed, Takeshita hit the Raging Fire to cap off the come-from-behind win.
Winner – Konosuke Takeshita
Grade: B+
This one was a ton of fun to watch. Angelico and Takeshita put on a show from the very start, especially Angelico, who looked ready to do everything in the ring. Takeshita still looks as strong as ever, so it’ll be interesting to see what a couple of wins will allow him to do in the future.
The Acclaimed Make Short Work of Opponents
The Acclaimed vs. Fancy Clancy & TJ Crawford
This one was pretty much over before it started, as Clancy got in a quick dropkick before The Acclaimed completely locked in. The match came to a fast end after the duo hit their respective finishers on their opponents for the win.
Winner – The Acclaimed
After the match, Max Caster took to the mic and began talking trash about the MxM Collection. He said that it was finally time for The Acclaimed to crash their party on AEW Collision. MxM then appeared on the screen and said that The Acclaimed weren’t invited.
Grade: C
About as average as you can get for a squash match. The Acclaimed looked good, but this was more about setting them up what should be some excellent feuding with MxM Collection. Those four going at it on the mic and in the ring will be a good time.
Willow Nightingale and Taya Valkyrie Go All Out
Willow Nightingale vs. Taya Valkyrie
Willow and Taya closed out tonight’s Rampage with a chaotic match. Taya got things started early with some quick offense on Willow, throwing her into the corner and stomping at her a few times. Willow was able to get back to her feet, though, and hit a running crossbody on Valkyrie after a few big punches.
With the momentum, Nightingale strung together a bunch of big moves, including a dropkick to send Valkyrie onto the apron, and then a cannonball drop outside of the ring.
Valkyrie looked a bit stunned after the cannonball, and Nightingale took the opportunity to continue her offense. She hit a big spinebuster onto her opponent before missing a dropkick, letting Taya back into it. Valkyrie hit a pair of running knees in the corner before hitting another big kick, but Nightingale was ready for what came next. After going on the ropes for a move, Nightingale stopped Valkyrie, superplexing her off the ropes and then finishing her with a powerbomb after the pair traded punches.
Winner – Willow Nightingale
Grade: A-
This was most definitely the best match of the night, and really showed just how incredible both Nightingale and Valkyrie are in the ring. Nightingale especially looked absolutely dominant at times, and really got the crowd going late when she was building up some much-needed momentum. Valkyrie letting her anger get the better of her will be something worth monitoring in future matches, especially after she had a talking to about it from Deonna Purrazzo in a post-show video.
AEW Rampage Review
Grade: B
All in all, not an awful show for AEW Rampage’s standards. Nothing too meaningful happened on the night, as this one felt more of a show to set the stage for future feuds and matches more so than anything. Still, the Valkyrie/Nightingale match was a highlight, and the prospect of an MxM Collection/The Acclaimed feud is well worth the show.
